Invocation
O God our heavenly Father, in Your promise to redeem the world, You sent your Son to fulfill Your promise. As You draw us by Your Spirit to see Him, and Him alone, cause us also to see those for whom He came. Fill with Your Spirit, grant to us the courage to speak with gentleness, patience, and courage of You and Your love all to Your glory alone. Amen.
Reading Luke 4:14-30; Psalm 16
Reflection
Picture Jesus in the synagogue, reading from the scroll of Isaiah, reading prophetic sections and declaring, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." The priests were not just amazed that the words from scripture and the commentary was from Jesus, the son of a carpenter, but they were furious!
We don't know much about the childhood and youth of Jesus. Much of this time was spent in Nazareth. From the text we know that the priest knew Jesus was the son of Joseph. We can assume Jesus spent time in the synagogue.
But now, Jesus is entering His public ministry. "News about Him spread through the whole countryside. He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised Him." Jesus was a making a name for Himself.
The encounter in the synagogue begins a time of confrontation with the priests and others in authority. Jesus was a threat. After the brief and heated exchange in the synagogue, the people took Jesus to a cliff with the purpose of throwing Him off. But, Jesus "walked through the crowd, and went on His way."
How is Jesus among us today?
The message that Jesus preached has come to life with an amazing group of missionaries in our Texas District. These missionaries represent at least 15 different culture groups. When is the last time you spoke with someone from the Sudan, Morocco, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Mexico, Cuba, Panama or Pakistan? These workers are either ordained, commissioned, or lay missionaries. Many are on the path to becoming ordained pastors or commissioned deaconesses in the LC-MS.
Because many of us live in pretty sheltered environments, we may not know how to act or how to think about these new messengers of the Gospel. God will open our minds and hearts to these men and women of faith. God is showing us a glimpse of Heaven, right here in Texas!
