Invocation
God our Father, when Your Son entered this world, there was clarity in His purpose. The redemption of the fallen human race was His mission. By Your grace we have been redeemed. May Your mission be clear in our hearts and minds that all we say and do would bring Your Gospel to those who do not know You and to those who need Your promise repeated again and again, in the name of Him who is, was, and is to come, Jesus. Amen.
Reading Luke 2:32-59; Psalm 102
Reflection
What business are you in? In the world of commerce, it's an important question. If your business is making widgets, everything you do had better involve making widgets. If it's serving customers, you had better serve customers. Businesses that lose sight of their main purpose---what business are we in?-soon fail.
The church is not a business per se. Sure, it has elements that need to performed with integrity and order and competency, in a business-like way. So, we use sound principles of accounting, for example, as well as much more.
A bigger question for every church, and every Christian, is this: what is my main purpose? Why do I do what I do, say what a say, think what I think? What gets me out of bed in the morning? What brings my greatest joy?
In the older translations of Luke 2:49, the 12 year-old-Jesus in the temple says: "Did you not know that I must be about my Father's business?", while newer translations say "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house? The literal translation is ambiguous: "it is necessary for me to be about 'the things of my Father.'" However you translate it, even Jesus as a young man knew that He had to be about His Father's business. He knew this from the beginning to the end. One of His final prayers, the one in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before He was to be crucified ended: "Father, not My will, but Your will be done." His Father's business, not His own, was to be done.
Ultimately, the Father's business was the salvation of the world, and only Jesus could do that. However, we are His sub-contractors, if you will. We bring the salvation of Jesus to this lost world in His name and by His grace, in whatever way God has gifted us. That is our purpose, our business. And as one of my parishioners stated so well: "If it's not all about Jesus, it's not about Jesus at all." We are all about Jesus. That's our business.
