Reflections
Does God still speak to us in prayer? I believe you might get many answers to this question. Some might say, "Well yes He does, but it is different than it was in the early church." I mean when the last time you were praying and an angel of the Lord stood in your presence with a special word? When was the last time you were praying and saw a vision not once but three times in one prayer? Maybe prayer has changed, maybe it isn't the same tool it once was, maybe we aren't the same people God had serving Him in the first century, or maybe it is the same today as it was then.
Well, in the reading from Acts we see two men. One has been chosen to lead the Church. The other was a faithful God-fearing centurion chosen to lead soldiers. One knew Jesus. The other did not know Jesus as his Savior. Peter had no clue what the vision meant. The centurion, Cornelius, simply received instructions from the Lord and obeyed. The two men were in prayer and never knew that their prayers would touch in a way only God could plan.
The prayer of two faithful men led them to an amazing opportunity to share and hear the good news about Jesus Christ, the world's Savior. The prayer of two faithful men played out in such a way that generations were forever changed. Salvation had come to Cornelius' house and the many guests he invited.
Does God still speak to us in prayer? My answer is most assuredly, "Yes!" He is just as amazing in our midst today as He was in the early church. Sometimes our prayers bring us together without our knowing how it will end up. The great news is that God will accomplish His purposes and invites us to use the tool of prayer to see His faithfulness throughout all generations. Sometimes the answers will take us to places we never dreamed possible. Prayer will lead us to people we never met before. The results are as surprising as they are amazing.
