January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how a woman can have a healthy pregnancy  and how our community can create a healthy environment for children. Read below to find out more of the resources for families to be healthy, active, involved, educated, financially stable, connected, and well informed. Let's make 2012 a great year for Arlington families!

Family/Youth Opportunities...

Strengthening Families Program available for families with children 9-16 years old. This 14-week program is offered Mondays, beginning February 6, 2012 at 5:30pm-8pm at Blanton Elementary School, 1900 S. Collins, Arlington, 76010. Dinner provided; transportation and babysitting if needed; and Free bag of groceries each week. To register, call Dora Ramirez at the East Arlington Family Support Center at 817-277-3050 or Jeannie Luna at Santa Fe Youth Services at 817-492-4673.

Healthy Marriage Conference on February 18, 2012 in downtown Fort Worth at Norris Conference Center. Includes a day of interactive workshops, including presentations in Spanish and relationship experts. Read more...

Dallas County is sponsoring a Juvenile Day of Pardon. If you are currently 10-17 and have a warrant for misdemeanor probation through the Juvenile Courts, January 28, 2012 from 10:00am-2:00pm you can show up and have your warrant canceled. Read more...

Community Cafe: Come meet your neighbors and learn about  Project REACH on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 5:30pm at the Hugh Smith Recreation Center.  Project REACH is a partnership between the City of Arlington, the Department of justice and YOU-our neighbors. Our mission is to strengthen communities by providing opportunities to get connected and to creatively address issues and tackle challenges of the community. Learn about some of the resources available in your community and to connect to important services within the Police Department and other local agencies. January 27, 2012 is Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day. Millions of workers could qualify for the first time this year because their earning dropped or their marital or parental statuses change. Childless workers, people with English as a second language, and grandparents raising grandchildren may qualify. February 1, 2012 is designated at UT Arlington Day. To participate in a "spirit contest," dress yourself, your kids, your car, or anythibng else in your best Maverick gear, take a picture, and email the photo. Three winners will each receive $250. Read more...

The Women's Alliance of the Arlington Chamber will be holding an entertaining and informative "After Hours" event on Jan 31 (5:30 - 7:30 pm) at Theatre Arlington. Andrea Roy, Economic Development Specialist for the City of Arlington will provide an update on current and proposed development in the city.
