The Arlington Housing Authority (AHA) announces the opening of the waiting list for the Housing Choice Voucher Program. The online application will be available beginning at 8:00am on November 1, 2011. Applicants can apply online at www.arlingtonhousing.us. Persons with disabilities or those requiring assistance to complete the application may apply via computer at the AHA's office located at 501 W. Sanford, Suite 20, Arlington, TX, 76011 between the hours of 8am and 5pm (M, W, F) and Tuesday 8am-7pm.

Family/Youth Opportunities...

Boys and Girls Clubs of Arlington: 2012 Soccer League. On Monday, November 7, 2011, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Arlington will start open Registration for the 2012 Co-Ed Soccer League for youth ages 6-12 years (grades 1-6). Registration ends Monday, January 9, 2012 with all games starting Saturday, January 28, 2011. For information about socce registration or becoming a member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Arlington go to www.bgcarlington.org.

Santa's Little Helpers. Join the staff at Hugh Smith for a fun and exciting time making ornaments, decorating cookies, reading a story and getting a special visit from the North Pole. $10 per child, ages 3-6. Friday, December 2nd, 6pm-8:30pm and Saturday, December 3rd, 11am-1:30pm. Located at Hugh Smith Recreation Center, 1815 New York Ave, 76010. 817-275-1351

The Healthy Start Program works with pregnant women, families with children under the age of 2 years, and community organizations. This voluntary program helps mother and child receive adequate health care srevices such as prenatal care, postpartum care, and well baby checkups. Health education classes are available. The Mayor's Youth Commission sponsors a night to stop cyberbullying on Nov 12 from 6pm to 9pm. This includes a big screen showing of the ABC Family Movie Cyberbullying, large group games, small group breakouts and popcorn and coke floats all held at Dottie Lynn Recreation Center, 3200 Norwood Lane. Our Military Kids wants to help your family. If you have a child ages 3 to 18 whose parent is currently deployed overseas with the National Guard or Reserves, your child is eligible for a grant. The grants, which can be up to $500, will pay for up to six months of an extracurricular activity of your choice. Read more...

Free toilets are available through water conservation program. Arlington encourages homeowners to replace older model toilets. Residents with homes built before 1992 that still have original toilets can qualify for up to two toilets per home. Applications are being accepted online at www.SaveArlingtonWater.com or call Dustan Compton at 817-459-6628.

 

The Ride2Work Program provides transportation for employment-related activities! This program is open to low- and moderate-income Arlington residents for: jobs; job training; job interviews; educational resources; and childcare. To read the eligibility requirements, click here. The Arlington Warrant Roundup began on October 31. The City of Arlington is working to clear up over 140,000 outstanding. The list of individuals with warrants is listed here. Arrests can occur at home, in the workplace, or wherever the individual is found. Read more...

Humane Resources' website has recently been updated with information concerning programs that are granting scholarships for women, hiring at-risk youth, offering free mentoring and tutoring for youth, and assisting with the employment of the formerly incarcerated in Dallas & Tarrant Counties.  Read more about Humane Resources here...

24-Hour Nurse Advice Now Available to JPS Arlington Patients. Call your Arlington Health Center anytime. Nurses are available 24 hours a day if you have a health concern or need advice. To connect to this service, contact your local JPS Health Center: Central Arlington (817.852.8190); Arlington/Kathryn Wilemon (817.702.6300); Family Medicine-Arlington (817.852.8470); Grand Prairie (817.702.4800). If this is an emergency please call 911.

 

Tarrant County Public Health is offering flu shots. People at a higher risk of getting much sicker if they get the flu are especially urged to get vaccinated, including pregnant women, young children, adults 65 and older, individuals with chronic medical conditions, people with a weakened immune system and those who live in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. People who live with or provide care for any high-risk individual are also urged to get vaccinated. At this time, TCPH does not have any preservative-free vaccine for children under 3. You can obtain the flu shot at the Arlington Public Health Center, 817-548-3990, 536 W. Randol Mill Road, Arlington, TX, 76011.

 

Several local agencies, including United Way of Tarrant County, are partnering to provide vision screenings to children. Arlington ISD schools on the vision van calendar this fall include Anderson Elementary, Johns Elementary, Burgin Elementary, Morton Elementary, Remynse Elementary and Thornton Elementary. Skills Training Opportunity:with Tarrant County College in partnership with Women's Center, TCC Workforce, Fort Worth Housing Authority, and TCC Foundation. Looking for interested women and men wanting to become a CNC Machine Operator. Program includes: hands-on CNC machine experience, 3 certifications, job readiness and job placement assistance. Tutoring Volunteers Needed. Helping Our Pupils Excel (H.O.P.E.) is looking for volunteers to assist with reading and math tutoring for 3rd-8th grade students. Texas voters will be asked to consider 10 amendments to the state Constitution as part of the November 8 general election. All of these items were sent to the public for consideration by a two thirds vote of both houses of the Texas Legislature during the legislative session that ended in June this year.
