We hope everyone is having a safe and happy summer! Even though the heat may try to slow us down, there are several great opportunities out there going on right now. Please read below and pass on any information that may be helpful.

Family/Youth Opportunities...

 

Arlington ISD is offering a Summer Feeding Program for 2011. Any child 1-18 can receive a free meal (breakfast and/or lunch) daily at certain sites. No registration or I.D. is needed. Food must be eaten onsite. This program is for children only. Click here for a list of sites and serving times.

 

Dallas County Health and Human Services Department - Housing Agency, Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list is open for families to apply for housing assistance. Preapplications will be accepted only on Thursday, July 14, 2011, during the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex, Ellis Davis Field House, located at 9191 S. Polk Street, Dallas, Texas. For a list of requirements and other information, click here.

 

The McKinney Housing Authority will accept applications for the Public Housing waiting list on June 1, 2011 thru August 31, 2011 for individuals and/or families that are eligible for one and three bedroom apartments. Read more...

Community Events and Resources 

Kaplan College invites you to their annual Community Resource Fair on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 from 12pm-2pm and 5pm-7pm. The Fair is held at 2241 S. Watson Rd., Suite 181, Arlington, 76010. The Ride2Work Program provides transportation for employment-related activities! This program is open to low- and moderate-income Arlington residents for: jobs; job training; job interviews; educational resources; and childcare. To read the eligibility requirements, click here. The Arlington Housing Authority announces that its Homeless Prevention Program has funds available. The Homeless Prevention Program is designed to assist low-income households pay past due rent or utilities in the event of unforeseen hardship or extenuating circusmtances beyond their control in the last 30 days. The program will pay up to three months rent or utilities to the landlord or utility company to prevent a pending eviction or disconnection of utilities. Click here for a flyer. Health/Wellness Opportunities...
Medical Center of Arlington is offering $48 screening mammograms the entire month of July. You qualify for a screening mammogram if you currently have no breast problems. Please call 817-472-4857 to schedule your appointment.

 

Did you know SKIN Cancer accounts for more than 50% of all Cancers? The Texas Oncology Center of Arlington is offering a FREE Skin Cancer Screening on Saturday, July 9 from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at 515 W. Mayfield Rd, Suite 101, Arlington, TX 76014. For more information, click here.

Cooking Matters is a six-week, hands-on class are taught in the kitchen by chefs and nutritionists who volunteer to teach nutrition, cook, foodbudgeting & shopping techniques. Groceries are provided to all adult and teen participants to take home at the end of class each week. The next round of courses will be held on June 28. For more information, click here.

 

The Veterans Affairs Department is accepting applications for new benefits that would provide a monthly stipend for caregivers of severely disabled veterans. The benefits are targeted at primary family caregivers of eligible post-9/11 veterans, and in addition to the stipend, include mental health services, access to health care insurance if they are not already entitled to it under a health plan, travel costs, training, counseling and respite care. VA also will provide some expanded benefits to caregivers of vets from all eras who already are enrolled in VA care, including additional training, counseling and access to the department's toll-free caregiver support line (1-855-260-3274). The department can process applications through the toll-free number, in person at VA medical centers, by mail or online at www.caregiver.va.gov

 

What is PCIP and Texas CHAP? The Texas Consumer Health Assistance Program, or CHAP, helps people without health coverage at a time when they need it the most. To be eligible, you must: (a) Have been uninsured for at least six months; (b) Have a pre-existing condition; (c) Have previously been denied coverage; (d) Are U.S. citizens or residing legally in the U.S; and (e) Can pay a reduced, monthly premium for enrollment. An Arlington program is pushing healthier food choices for girls. The Arlington Library's new Fitnessista program this summer offers free classes designed to teach girls going into the third, fourth and fifth grades the importance of fitness, self-esteem and healthful eating. Read more...

The Oil & Gas Production Technician Certification Program will begin training classes in early July 2011 at Tarrant County College South Campus. Scholarships are available. For more information, click here.

Can you administer First Aid in a mental health crisis? Mental Health First Aid is a 12 hour course that prepares members of the public to provide Mental Health First Aid to those in need. Courses will be scheduled through MHMR of Tarrant County's Training Department at 817-569-4342.

Fire ast Tanglewood Apartments

The Parkview Addition Neighborhood Association is collecting donations in coordination with the Red Cross for victims of the tragic fire at the Tanglewood Apartments this past weekend. Items needed are hygiene items; kitchen items; household items; clothing; and cash donations. Donations can be dropped off at:

On Friday July 29th, the Tarrant County Commissioners Office will host a "preregistration" for its annual "Back to School Round-Up".  This event is held at the Rangers Ballpark, and it is an opportunity to sign-up to receive items necessary to start the school year right!  If you are interested in helping with this event, contact Tawney Harris at [email protected].

 

County Commissioner Andy Nguyen extends an invitation to "Donuts & Dialog" on Wednesday, July 13  from 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM at the Kennedale Community Center, 316 W. 3rd Street, Kennedale, TX 76060 and Wednesday, August 3, from 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM at Dalworthington Gardens City Hall, 2600 Roosevelt Dr, DWG, TX 76016. These monthly meetings have the goal of bringing the Commissioner's Office and the community together for regular information exchange.
