Community Events and Resources 

The Ride2Work Program provides transportation for employment-related activities! This program is open to low- and moderate-income Arlington residents for: jobs; job training; job interviews; educational resources; and childcare. To read the eligibility requirements, click here. The Dallas Housing Authority is opening their waiting list for the Housing Choice Voucher Program for ONE DAY. The Online Pre-Application will be available at www.dhadal.com beginning at 8:00am on April 6, 2011 and will remain available until 6:00pm April 7, 2011. Read more...

The Arlington Housing Authority announces that its Homeless Prevention Program has funds available. The Homeless Prevention Program is designed to assist low-income households pay past due rent or utilities in the event of unforeseen hardship or extenuating circusmtances beyond their control in the last 30 days. The program will pay up to three months rent or utilities to the landlord or utility company to prevent a pending eviction or disconnection of utilities. Click here for a flyer. Arlington residents can apply for a free toilet at the "Go With the Flow" Toilet Distribution event on Saturday, May 7 from 8:00am to 2:00pm. This takes place at the Water Utilities Department at 200 N. Cooper St. The City will give away 600 free, high-efficiency toilets. Replacing older toilets with Watersense® labeled toilets can save water and money. Read more...

Financial Education classes are available throughout Tarrant County! Come learn the things they never taught you in school--budgeting, taxes and record keeping, credit, financial institutions, savings and insurance. This class is offered by Catholic Charities. Texas Agrilife Extension Services would like to help you "Face the Challenges of Growing a Business." The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department invites you to the "Make a Splash Event" on Saturday, April 2 from 12pm to 4pm. This takes place at the Hugh Smith Indoor Pool at 1815 New York Ave, 76010 to bring neighborhoods and residents together in a fun, family-friendly and healthy environment. Make a Splash offers a free, fun-filled day of activities with programs on water safety education, scuba demonstrations and indoor kayaking. The Women's One Day is an event celebrating a lifetime of health. You are invited to a morning of free education and information on women's health issues on Saturday, April 9, 2011, from 10am-12pm at the Hugh Smith Recreation and Senior Center, 1815 New York Avenue, Arlington TX 76010. There will be door prizes and cute pink and black totes to the first 100 participants. Please encourage your mothers and daughters, aunts and cousins to attend! The spring 2011 FSC/TC Transition and Disability Resource Expo will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 10am-2pm at the Resource Connection Conference Center/Gymnasium at 2300 Circle Drive Fort Worth TX, 76119. This event is designed around the needs of anyone with a disability by bringing together vendors, service providers, and agencies with this focus. In addition, seminars will be held on social security, medicaid waiver programs, and guardianship. This event is free for attendees. Please see the attached flyer.

 

Would you like on-site assistance with CHIP/Medicaid applications? The Tarrant County CHIP Coalition will be at 55 Pre-K round-ups in Fort Worth ISD in March and April. They are hoping to help a lot of families apply for CHIP and children's Medicaid at the same time they're enrolling their children in pre-K. The Vestido Rojo event is a coordinated effort between TCC, the American Heart Association, and Univision 23 to educate the Latina population about heart disease. Free lunch is offered to the first 300 attendees and a free screening for the first 150 (they must fast before). This event will take place Saturday May 7th from 730am to 130pm at the TCC Trinity River Campus at 300 Trinity Campus Circle Fort Worth, 76102. New Beginnings Christian Academy (NBCA) has opened a new Arlington office and is accepting referrals. NBCA offers: (1) Classes are no larger than 10 students; (2) The entire program can be delivered in Spanish or English. (3) The cost ranges from $275-$375 (not including $25 tutoring session). (4) Much of the work is available in a work-at-home format. (5) Since 2005, New Beginnings Christian Academy has graduated over 8,000. Prepare for the Citizenship Test with Arlington Reads for FREE. Classes take place at the East Branch Library, 1624 New York Ave, 76010. Students may attend class on either Tuesday (10am-11am) or Thursday (6pm-7pm). The class and materials are FREE. Job/Training Opportunities...

On March 31st TCC Trinity River Campus will host a job fair that is open to students and anyone from the community. This event will take place from 9am to 1pm. Please see the attached flyer.

The South Campus of Tarrant County College will host a job fair on Wednesday April 6th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Attached is a flyer with information for employeers interested in participating in participating and contact information at the school.

Coast-to-Coast Career Fairs invites you to attend the Dallas Job Fair on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. This is a great opportunity to meet face to face and interview with dozens o top employers who are hiring for positions in all types of industries. You are invited to join United Way of Tarrant County and Catholic Charities for a unique opportunity to learn about the expanding field of Behavioral Economics...why people make the financial decisions they do. The afternoon will provide case managers and staff who work with families information on how to discuss finances and help families begin to change behaviors. The UNT Health Science Center offers the North Texas Health Forum on April 7, 2011 and April 8, 2011 at 3500 Camp Bowie Blvd, Fort Worth, TX, 76107. This event is free and open to the public. Emotional well-being is a significant problem for African American children in Tarrant County. The North Texas Health Forum will present the root causes of this issue in the local Tarrant County community and begin the investigation of approaches to reduce this burden. Seating is limited. Do you know someone who goes the extra mile to help our youth? Would this person be a great role model for others? Do you belong to a community organization that cares about our youth? If you answered "yes" to these questions, then your community organization should nominate them for the Extra Mile Award prior to our extended due date, March 31st.  All nominees will be invited to the First Rate Living Luncheon at the Diamond Club at the Ballpark on April 14th.  There will be 6 winners and 6 runners up that will be given trophies -and be given the opportunity to designate a non-profit of choice to receive a grant from First Rate Inc. of either $1,200 or $400. For more information about the Extra Mile Award, visit the Arlington Alliance for Youth website: (Click Here). The YMCA of Arlington presents "Spirit in Motion: A Community Celebration" on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 7:30pm. This event features contemporary Christian artists. United Way of Tarrant County invites you to an online town hall to give them ideas for helping students succeed in school and life. The online town hall is your chance to make your mark on improving the lives of thousands of students across the country. At the end of the online town hall, United Way will bring the best ideas to the larger community in a live, national town hall webcast on March 31st. Click here.

On April 20 United Way-Arlington will celebrate 30 years of increasing opportunities for education, income and health. When this partnership of United Way, the City of Arlington and knowledgeable community volunteers began in 1981, it was hailed as the first of its kind in the nation. Past volunteers who have made it all possible will be honored at the annual United Way-Arlington "Report to the Community" luncheon slated for noon to 1:30 p.m. April 20 at Cacharel Restaurant (Grand Ballroom, 7th Floor) in Arlington. On January 27th, an estimated 136 individuals were identified unsheltered and homeless, representing a 30% decrease from 2009. The reduction demonstrates a combination of increased focus on street homelessness by City and County leaders. Read more...
