We gladly share the our first Annual Report, covering the accomplishments of the first 12 months that the East Arlington Famly Support Center began providing services to the community (July2009-June2010).

Community Events and Resources 

 A new Arlington program is offering rides to low-and-moderate-income residents to help with jobs and work-related activities. Through the Ride2Work Program, participants can schedule rides to their jobs, work-related activities such as job training or interviews, or childcare anywhere in Arlington, Hurst, Euless or Bedford for $2 each way. Financial Education classes are available throughout Tarrant County! Come learn the things they never taught you in school--budgeting, taxes and record keeping, credit, financial institutions, savings and insurance. This class is offered by Catholic Charities. To register, call 817-289-2816. For a schedule of classes, click here.

United Way's Online Community Resource Directory is now available in Spanish and Vietnamese, as well as English. Accessed through www.tarrantcounty211.org, the online database provides free information about services available in Tarrant and seven surrounding counties for people needing help related to basic needs, education, financial assistance, health issues and many other concerns.

Citizen Police Academy (CPA) classes will begin Monday, February 28, 2011. Classes meet on Monday nights from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM for the next 11 weeks. To graduate, applicants must attend at least 9 of the 11 classes. Therefore, prior to applying, please determine whether or not you can attend the minimum number of classes for graduation. Family/Youth Opportunities...

 

You are invited to the Friendship Not Fear   5K/1 Mile Run/Walk, 8:30 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2011. Crouch Elementary is taking a stand against bullying and promoting friendship by holding their first 5k/1 mile run/walk to kick off their Friendship not Fear anti-bullying program. The purpose of the run is to bring awareness to the issue of bullying. Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington- Mavericks Basketball League. Registration for the 2011 Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington- Mavericks Basketball League  is now available at each of our 5 locations, or you can visit us online at www.bgcarlington.org. All youth (male & female) in grades 1st-6th are encouraged to come out and register for the 2011 season. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Arlington Basketball Season runs from Saturday March 26- Saturday May 21. Early Registration is December 6th- February 18th. Late registration is February 21st- March 4th.

Families with children with disabilities can get additional help with medical bills. The state has launched a new program this month that will help pay medical bills for children with disabilities.  It helps families who need health insurance, but make too much money to get Medicaid. Families "buy in" to Medicaid by making a monthly payment (premium). For more information, click here.

 

If you or someone in your household has special needs, the Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) is a database that enables the Office of Emergency  Management to register residents with special needs so that we can better plan for disasters or emergencies. Anyone, including family, friends, caretakers or community organizations can register on behalf of an individual with a special need.  Read more...

A new scholarship is available for local students. The Dallas Mavericks, the Jason Terry Foundation and Century 21 Mike Bowman, Inc. are pleased to present the first-ever Mavs Scholarship to Metroplex high school seniors, who are in financial need. Applications are due February 25. Read more...

 

Prepare for the Citizenship Test with Arlington Reads for FREE. Classes take place at the East Branch Library, 1624 New York Ave, 76010. Students may attend class on either Tuesday (10am-11am) or Thursday (6pm-7pm). The class and materials are FREE. If interested, please register with an Arlington Reads Coordinator by calling 817-275-3321.

 

The Arlington Reads program is offering FREE English classes for adults. Classes are for anyone over the age of 18 interested in learning English for the first time or improving the English they already know. Orientations last 30 minutes, and dates are as follows: January 28 (3pm); February 7 (10:30am); February 19 (1:00pm); February 23 (10:30am); March 4 (3:30pm); March 17 (7:00pm); and March 29 (1:00pm). WEE READ classes are available at the East Branch Library. These classes include story time and activities for children ages 1-4. A parent/guardian must attend class. Classes are on Monday (10:30am-11:30am) and Saturday (1:30pm-2:30pm). The next available Monday classes are: February 14. The next available Saturday classes are February 12, and February 19. No registration is necessary.

The Arlington Job Fair will have employers on-site and is being held on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at Grace Community Church, 801 W Bardin Rd, Arlington, 76017. Click here for a flyer.

Goodwill Industries will be hosting the Career Training Provider Fair on February 25th from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at their location on 4005 Campus Dr. Fort Worth, TX 76119. Volunteer Opportunities...
Do you want to help reduce the number of uninsured children in our community? The Tarrant County CHIP Coalition is sponsoring two training sessions for volunteers who want to help families apply for children's Medicaid or CHIP. Training sessions are on February 9 and February 13. Click here for a flyer.
 
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) provides free tax preparation and individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINS) for the working poor. VITA focuses on maximizing the Earned Income Tax Credits and other deductions available to these families. Volunteers are needed January 15 through April 15. Click here for more information.
