Community Events and Resources
A new Arlington program is offering rides to low-and-moderate-income residents to help with jobs and work-related activities. Through the Ride2Work Program, participants can schedule rides to their jobs, work-related activities such as job training or interviews, or childcare anywhere in Arlington, Hurst, Euless or Bedford for $2 each way. Financial Education classes are available throughout Tarrant County! Come learn the things they never taught you in school--budgeting, taxes and record keeping, credit, financial institutions, savings and insurance. This class is offered by Catholic Charities. United Way's Online Community Resource Directory is now available in Spanish and Vietnamese, as well as English. Accessed through www.tarrantcounty211.org, the online database provides free information about services available in Tarrant and seven surrounding counties for people needing help related to basic needs, education, financial assistance, health issues and many other concerns.
Citizen Police Academy (CPA) classes will begin Monday, February 28, 2011. Classes meet on Monday nights from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM for the next 11 weeks. To graduate, applicants must attend at least 9 of the 11 classes. Therefore, prior to applying, please determine whether or not you can attend the minimum number of classes for graduation. Health/Wellness Opportunities...
Families with children with disabilities can get additional help with medical bills. The state has launched a new program this month that will help pay medical bills for children with disabilities. It helps families who need health insurance, but make too much money to get Medicaid. Families "buy in" to Medicaid by making a monthly payment (premium). For more information, click here.
If you or someone in your household has special needs, the Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) is a database that enables the Office of Emergency Management to register residents with special needs so that we can better plan for disasters or emergencies. Anyone, including family, friends, caretakers or community organizations can register on behalf of an individual with a special need. Read more...

Educational Opportunities...

Prepare for the Citizenship Test with Arlington Reads for FREE. Classes take place at the East Branch Library, 1624 New York Ave, 76010. Students may attend class on either Tuesday (10am-11am) or Thursday (6pm-7pm). The class and materials are FREE. If interested, please register with an Arlington Reads Coordinator by calling 817-275-3321.
Computer Classes are available for FREE at the East Arlington Branch Library. The next class will cover Basic MS Excel 2007 and begins Monday, January 31 through Thursday, February 3 from 2pm to 5pm. Register online at www.arlingtonlibrary.org or call the Arlington Reads office at 817-459-6985.
A GED preparation program is available online for FREE through Arlington Reads. Students work at least 4 hours a week at their own page and on their own schedule as they study. Study sessions/classes are also offered by volunteer tutors. You must register and attend an orientation to be enrolled in the program are January 18-22 at the George W. Hawkes Central Library, 2nd Floor. Orientations are Tuesday, January 25 (10am-12pm) and Thursday, January 27 (6pm-8pm). For more information, call the Arlington Reads office at 817-459-6985.
The Arlington Reads program is offering FREE English classes for adults. Classes are for anyone over the age of 18 interested in learning English for the first time or improving the English they already know. Orientations last 30 minutes, and dates are as follows: January 28 (3pm); February 7 (10:30am); February 19 (1:00pm); February 23 (10:30am); March 4 (3:30pm); March 17 (7:00pm); and March 29 (1:00pm). WEE READ classes are available at the East Branch Library. These classes include story time and activities for children ages 1-4. A parent/guardian must attend class. Classes are on Monday (10:30am-11:30am) and Saturday (1:30pm-2:30pm). The next available Monday classes are: January 24, January 31, February 7, and February 14. The next available Saturday classes are January 22, January 29, February 5, February 12, and February 19. No registration is necessary.
The staff of the Arlington Public Library presents "My First Library Card," a library card designed for newborns to three year olds. This card, launched on January 3, shows the importance of showing our babies to read and sign so they can enter the world of print, song, rhyme, and story. Stop by the library today to get a card for your little one!

Volunteer Opportunities...
The Parkview Neighborhood is looking for able-bodied men, women, teens who would like to join their Helping Hands Team. This is a community service team to help a neighbor who needs a little assistance in cleaning-up outdoors, edging, mowing, or limb trimming. This would be once a month project where Team members get together on Saturday morning and contribute their time and talents to help out a friend and neighbor. We have several requests in our HHT box of requests at the present time. Please call and add your name to the list of available Team members.
