Community Events and Resources 

 A new Arlington program is offering rides to low-and-moderate-income residents to help with jobs and work-related activities. Through the Ride2Work Program, participants can schedule rides to their jobs, work-related activities such as job training or interviews, or childcare anywhere in Arlington, Hurst, Euless or Bedford for $2 each way. Could your agency benefit from a volunteer crew on Monday, January 17, 2010 from about 8am-12pm? The Martin Luther King Day of Service Committee is looking for opportunities to volunteer, from neighborhood beautification projects, painting/cleaning, or minor repairs. If you have an indoor or outdoor project for a volunteer crew, please contact Stephanie Gillespie at stephanie.gillespie@arlingtontx.gov.

 

United Way's Online Community Resource Directory is now available in Spanish and Vietnamese, as well as English. Accessed through www.tarrantcounty211.org, the online database provides free information about services available in Tarrant and seven surrounding counties for people needing help related to basic needs, education, financial assistance, health issues and many other concerns.

Family/Youth Opportunities...

 

The Families First program is a program designed for families who are at risk of becoming involved with Child Protective Services or for those families that wish to strengthen their parenting skills and relationships with their children. Families First will serve pregnant mothers or families with at least one child up to the age of 12 who are experiencing at least one identified risk factor. Bilingual (Spanish speaking) staff and materials available. Referrals may be sent to this email: FamiliesFirstReferrals@ccdofw.org or by fax to 817-289-2774. The North Texas Poison Center, housed at Parkland Memorial Hospital, will be discontinuing its old hotline number, 1.800.POISON.1 (1.800.761.7664) at the beginning of the New Year. All callers should instead call the 1.800.222.1222 number that has been in effect in North Texas and nationwide since 2001. In Texas, this number connects you to one of six poison centers so that a caller will never be placed on hold. Read more...

Educational Opportunities...

Arlington has launched their Annual Animal Essay contest, and they are looking for entries! Now in its tenth year, the Arlington Animal Essay Contest is open to all students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 who reside within the city limits of Arlington. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14. Texas Education Agency (TEA) is pleased to announce the availability of state-funded college entrance exams for current 11th grade public and home schooled students as part of the 2010-11 Texas College Preparation Program. Job/Training Opportunities...
 CNC Machine Operation Training teaches participants the basic knowledge and skills for Computer Numeric Control machine operators. Training classes are available in January. Click here for more information.

The Tarrant Area Food Bank is offering a FREE Community Kitchen training. This 16-week free culinary arts job training includes life skills, job readiness, and employment services. Training is Monday thru Friday, from 7:45am to 4:00pm, and includes an internship at a food service facility. A professional chef provides the culinary training, and ServSafe training is included. The first step to be considered for this training is to attend one of the training fairs listed: (1) Monday, January 1st 1:00pm OR (2) Tuesdsay, January 11 at 9:00am. Both training fairs are located at the Tarrant Area Food Bank, 2600 Cullen Street, Fort Worth, TX 76107. See attached flyer.

The Prevent Now Coalition,  the Tarrant County Commissioner's Office-Pct. 2 and the Junior League of Alrington will be presenting "Stewards of Children" on Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 11am to 2:30pm at the Arlington Subcourthouse, 700 E Abram, 76010.  Stewards of Children is a revolutionary, evidence-based sexual abuse prevention program that educates adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse, and motivates them to courageous action. Volunteer Opportunities...

Reminder: Now Is the Time to Apply for Small Grants for Academic or Life Skills Development, Community Service, or Semester of Service Projects. Deadline for submitting applications for Alliance 2011 Small Grants is January 10, 2011.  Winners will be notified by January 17th.  Awards will be presented to grant winners at the Youth Collaboration Breakfast on February 18th at the AISD Professional Development Center.  Organizations planning to submit an application should do so as soon as possible. Applications should be submitted electronically by visiting www.arlingtonalliance4youth.org and going to the Small Grants section.  Instructions for applying and the application form are available there. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) provides free tax preparation and individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINS) for the working poor. VITA focuses on maximizing the Earned Income Tax Credits and other deductions available to these families. Volunteers are needed January 15 through April 15. Click here for more information.

 

The Parkview Neighborhood is looking for able-bodied men, women, teens who would like to join their Helping Hands Team. This is a community service team to help a neighbor who needs a little assistance in cleaning-up outdoors, edging, mowing, or limb trimming.  This would be once a month project where Team members get together on Saturday morning and contribute their time and talents to help out a friend and neighbor.  We have several requests in our HHT box of requests at the present time.  Please call and add your name to the list of available Team members.
