Volunteer Opportunities...
The JPS Clothes Closet at the Main Campus is running low of clothing to distribute to patients being discharged from the hospital. JPS is mainly in need of men's clothing in smaller sizes, along with shoes and new underwear. All clothing must be clean and useable, should be appropriate for someone leaving the hospital (casual clothing, no dress clothes, suits or heels). Volunteer Services prefers deliveries on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 3:00pm. To contribute, call Volunteer Services at 817-927-1590 to make donation arrangements.
Be a Part of SLANT 45. SLANT 45 provides a chance to build community, connect kids to their community and empower them to understand that they can make a difference and change things. More info...
HOPE Tutoring helps students in the 3rd through 8th grades with school work. Last year, 145 students participated in the program and 95% showed improvement in their report cards. One of the challenges that the program has faced in recent years is a large backlog of students who need help with homework, but must wait until tutors become available. Participation as a tutor in the program requires one hour of time each week. Volunteers may tutor Tuesday or Thursday from 6:30PM-7:30PM. New volunteers attend an orientation session at Good Shepherd UMC, 2020 S Collins on Tuesday, September 7th, 6:00 - 8:30PM. If you cannot make a full time commitment, please consider being a substitute tutor. If you wish to have more information on this important community ministry, please contact HOPE Tutoring (817-860-7757).
Keeping students in school is integral to their lifelong success as well as the continued prosperity of the Arlington community. For this reason, the Arlington ISD will host an Operation Graduation Walk Saturday, Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. The walk is a collaborative effort that requires the support of the community with the goal of increasing the graduation rate of Arlington high school students. We ask that you support the Operation Graduation Walk by volunteering your time. Participants in this event will walk or drive to the homes of students who were enrolled in school in spring 2010 but do not return to school in the fall. Volunteers will encourage students to come back to school, and all Arlington high schools will be open that day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to re-enroll students. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the AISD dropout prevention department at 682-867-7373. |

Child Abuse Prevention Tip...
Water and Car Safety Urged for Summer: 62 Children Have Already Drowned in 2010, 11 Children Have Died from Hyperthermia. Summer weather is upon us and the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is urging all Texans to be on guard against one of the leading causes of death among infants, toddlers, and young children: accidental drowning and hyperthermia. Already, at least 62 children have drowned in Texas this year, and yet the deadliest period for drowning, which lasts through Labor Day, still lies ahead. Each year, DFPS keeps an unofficial count of child drowning deaths. Last year, 113 children drowned in Texas - the most since DFPS began its count in 2005. Eleven children have died from hyperthermia because they were left in cars in the heat. Texas leads in the nation in hot car deaths among children. "Each of these tragedies could have been prevented by not leaving children alone," said Sasha Rasco, DFPS assistant commissioner for Child Care Licensing. "Children should never be left unsupervised for any length of time around water or in cars because the results can be devastating in a matter of minutes. If you can't see them, you can't save them."
