Over the last couple of weeks we have received several calls from our clients about different notices about their website. We are glad they took the time to call, as each of them was a scam and could have resulted in additional, unnecessary fees, and many headaches for all. Since the occurrences of these incidents seem to be on the rise, we wanted to take a few minutes and review the most common for your awareness.
1.) Clients receive email or US mail notification of their domains expiring and the need for immediate action to renew them. We covered this a few months back... but companies like Domain Registration of America continue to search domain registration databases and send domain registrants inaccurate and misleading notifications in hope they will send a check and with payment, DROA and other companies then transfer the domain registration away from where it resides to their company hoping to get multiple renewals and processing fees. Again - this is a scam... similar to the long distance phone scams of years ago. Do not take any action, discard the notices.
2.) Clients receive email or US mail notification of hosting expiration and the need for immediate action to renew them. Similar to the domain scam above, these are misleading. Please do not take any action and discard the notices.
3.) Clients receive offers from companies or individuals stating they can help with getting you to the top of Google and other search engine listings. While this sounds great, there are many factors in SEO and many of these steps are completed when your site is built and modified appropriately as we maintain your site. While their are many reputable companies who perform SEO, very few solicit customers using this marketing strategy. If you are interested in an SEO campaign, please contact us. We would welcome the opportunity to work with you and if needed help you select a specialty company for this purpose. Unfortunately one of our clients responded and signed up for these services, paid several hundred dollars and then received excuses, not results when they looked for improvements in their search engine rankings.
4.) The latest scam is email inquiries or "enquiry " from over seas companies looking to purchase or pay for links from your website. This was a popular practice a few years back with in the US and for many reasons was discontinued and is now frowned upon by the development community as the "rules" for link building have changed a little. These paid links have been the source for other issues from spamming to site hacking and misuse or misrepresentation. It's also common to read on the developer bulletin boards that the promise of payment rarely results in a valid payment transaction.
We realize some offers you will receive are very enticing and often are too good to pass up. They are designed like this, and many people fall for them... (Otherwise this practice would not continue...) If you get an offer that looks too good to be true or looks like something you just can't pass up and you feel like you need to respond... pick up the phone and call us... Let us review this at no charge to you and help you make an informed decision.
