AE - KingsGreetings!

At the beginning of each year, Chicago celebrates its international identity at the Chicago Consular Ball. This event brings together 83 consul generals, with their colleagues and community leaders, to honor this great city's many cultures, traditions and histories. The mood is of sharing: respecting differences, spotlighting commonalities, and taking pride in the homelands that the consuls represent.

Attending this year's Ball, I started thinking about the role of ambassadors and diplomats in our society. Whatever their individual projects - political, economic, cultural, educational - they share common goals. Often the primary face of their own countries in a foreign land, they aim to represent them in a way that establishes relationships, strengthens connections and opens doors for interest and communication. When they speak about their cultures, their energy and commitment are clear, and the audience gains a sense of connection to another country and way of life. Diplomats carry a tremendous responsibility to educate the international public about the uniqueness and strengths of their countries, and are often central in resolving international conflicts.

We are living in a time of globalization, but also of increased awareness of the value of each culture's unique contribution to the world. Dancers can play a role in this multicultural experience. Those who tour to other countries become ambassadors for their homelands, just as Olympians do. Also, many ballets pay tribute to international cultural themes. Several come to mind immediately - Nutcracker, Don Quixote and Flames of Paris - but there are many more. Choreographers and dancers in these ballets have the responsibility to portray these different cultures respectfully, and they become ambassadors of a sort.

Most importantly, dancers are ambassadors of dance itself throughout their lives. What dancer has less pride and passion for his or her art form than an ambassador has for his or her country?

My dance friends and I have noticed that we never stop talking about dance, even when we are far from the stage, studio or dance store. I have no doubt that others receive an impression of what dance is all about any time they interact with those of us who make dance central to our lives. In a sense, when we embrace an art form or cultural commitment, we all become ambassadors in our chosen fields. With dance so integral to our lives, we represent this amazing art to those around us. May we always represent it with the same level of pride and respect that I have observed in diplomats speaking of their homelands.

Focus: Bunions

Got bunions? This deformity is so common that some dancers, bunionteachers and pointe fitters simply refer to the big toe joint as "the bunion joint," whether or not the deformity is present in an individual foot.

But what are bunions and how do you get them? From your grand plié or your grandmother? Can you avoid getting them if they run in your family?

Bunions are the source of a fair bit of debate in the dance world today. But Dr. Lisa Schoene, a Chicago podiatrist and dance and sports medicine specialist, has some amazing answers about bunion development, and stopping them in their tracks.
