A New Beginning for Laura
|
Laura Borges with daughter Reyna |
GRACE Transitional Housing resident, Laura Borges, successfully completed the program on January 31, 2012. Laura entered the program in August 2009 after leaving a domestic violence situation. GRACE provided safe housing for her and her young daughter, Reyna, so that she could focus on moving forward with her life.
While participating in the program, Laura completed her master’s degree in education and obtained English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher certification. She substitutes regularly for the Hurst/Euless/Beford Independent School District and hopes to work there full time as an ESL educator. To supplement her income, Laura proactively obtained additional part-time employment at a daycare facility where she was able to take Reyna with her.
Laura’s quality of life has improved vastly in two years. According to Transitional Housing Program Manager Olivia Wedel, "We are so proud that Laura was able to move into stable housing in Hurst without relying on government assistance! When we consider where she came from and where she is today, Laura is truly a survivor. We look forward to celebrating her graduation in July with our other candidates." |
Cooking Matters at GRACE Clinic
GRACE is gearing up for a new cooking class starting March 26.
The GRACE Clinic and Food Pantry in partnership with the Tarrant Area Food Bank is completing the second, popular Cooking Matters course for Spanish speaking clients. This new course for English speakers begins March 26.
Clinic and pantry staff are offering this course to help clients improve their health by making better eating choices as well as to teach them how to cook nutritious meals with more vegetables and whole grains.
Class participants will learn how to prepare delicious meals like veggie quesadillas with organic, seasonal produce from the GRACE gardens. Participants also will learn basic frugal techniques such as preparing a whole chicken and balancing a diet with items available on the GRACE Food Pantry shelves. Menu planning techniques are based upon the USDA MyPlate program.
If you would like to participate in the March class, then please contact Nurse Manager Amy Holcomb as soon as possible at 817-488-7009 ext. 151. The course is available to the public, and space is limited to 15.

The Drive Into The Night - Twilight Tee-off benefiting GRACE is scheduled for Friday, March 23! Park Place Lexus and GRACE invite you to join us for a fun and unique golf experience.
You'll play nine holes of golf with nothing but a glow-in-the-dark golf ball and the light of the stars on the Grapevine Golf Course! Although we will have prizes for the best scores, the real goal is to raise money for the GRACE Feed Our Kids summer lunch program while sharing a wonderful evening together.
This Third Annual Golf Tournament is sure to sell out quickly as sponsorships and tickets are limited, so please reserve your place today by contacting us here at GRACE.
About Feed Our Kids: The money raised through Drive Into The Night will help GRACE make a difference in the lives of school-aged children in our community. Feed Our Kids is a summer lunch program that provides nutritious meals to children
who qualify for free or reduced priced lunches at their schools. Many of these children would go hungry during these summer weeks when their school is not in session.
This year, volunteers will serve lunch and provide fun activities to as many as 650 children per day for 11 weeks. That's more than 35,000 total meals! Your participation in Drive Into The Night, through sponsorship or as a golfer, will help ensure that these programs reach as many children as possible.
