Tickled Pink
Along with hundreds of families passing through the GRACE Christmas Cottage this past December, Ms. Jones* wanted nothing more than to provide a nice Christmas for her three daughters. Though she is a single, working mom who struggles to make ends meet, Ms. Jones maintains an extremely tight budget throughout the year and does not regularly use GRACE's services. But Ms. Jones noticed that her daughters' few dolls were ragged and worn. Because she did not want to go into debt for Barbies, Ms. Jones finally called GRACE.
Ms. Jones timidly entered the GRACE Christmas Cottage, expecting to just pick up a few items and leave. Instead, a bubbly high school student immediately greeted her. Ms. Jones's high school age volunteer (who is a bit of a girly-girl) had signed up to work at the Christmas Cottage with her mom through the National Charity League. She jumped at the chance to find gifts for three little girly-girls.
The volunteer immediately went to pull every Barbie she could possibly find, especially ones that suited the girls ages three, seven and nine. Then she tracked down Barbie pajamas and even some Barbie-themed wrapped paper.
By the end of the trip, both Ms. Jones and her volunteer were in tears. Ms. Jones left armed with not just a Barbie doll but an entire Barbie-themed Christmas! Her volunteer had the great pleasure of giving toys she loved as a little girl. According to Seasonal Program Manager Lori Stevens, moments like this are what made the Christmas Cottage such a special experience for the clients AND for the volunteers.
