Joe's Story

beads"I am thankful for the parents who are teaching their children about the benefits of donating their time to help the less fortunate in their community. Children are our future leaders. Our community will be in better shape if we start teaching them to care for one another now and to help the weak, the poor and the sick that we all live with. We must teach this with actions, not words.

A young mother brought her two daughters Taylor and Tiffany Thomas and their friend Harper Cozzens (ages 4, 6 and 8) to Graceful Buys Resale store to make a donation. Their grandmother had given them some old jewelry, and the girls decided to package it in ziplock bags and sell it along with lemonade at a stand they set up over the weekend. They collected $120.87 and donated it all to GRACE along with a bagful of jewelry for us to sell and a big bag of unopened dolls and stuffed animals for kids.

Their mother asked me to tell the kids how we would use the jewelry and the money. I explained how we would sell the jewelry and use the money to provide groceries to hungry families, medicine for the sick and help for people to pay rent. The dolls would be taken to the Christmas Cottage for children who would otherwise receive nothing for Christmas.

A week later, the kids held a Christmas game night at their home and raised another $700 for GRACE. I am so proud of what they did." -GRACEful Buys Manager Joe Alvidrez

Stellar Scholars

We at GRACE are so proud to announce that two of our own have been outstanding scholars for the past year.

Laura GraduatesLaura is another success story for the GRACE Transitional Housing program!  She completed her requirements to graduate with her Master's degree from Texas Wesleyan University on Saturday, December 10. Laura graduated with a 4.0 while working two part-time jobs, finishing internship requirements and taking care of her young daughter. Throughout her two years in the program, Laura has demonstrated active participation and will graduate successfully in January.

Alyssa DavisUniversity of Texas Plan II Honors student Alyssa Davis interned in the development office at GRACE last summer where she worked on projects ranging from Feed Our Kids to the Style & GRACE store opening.

In part because of her work at GRACE, Alyssa recently accepted an internship in Washington D.C. next summer at the Senate HELP Committee. She has also received the University of Texas nomination for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, a highly competitive national scholarship for students seeking advanced study in public service.

Excellent work, ladies!

New Cooking Matters Classes
vegetables
Fresh, seasonal vegetables take center stage in the GRACE Cooking Matters classes

The GRACE Community Clinic, the GRACE Food Pantry, and the Tarrant Area Food Bank have collaborated together to hold Cooking Matter Classes at the GRACE Clinic.

Cooking Matters is a six week program taught by the Tarrant Area Food Bank and Volunteers that incorporates healthy life styles and proper food preparation and cooking. Topics include: the Food Pyramid and the My Plate portion sizes, nutrition label reading, comparative unit price shopping, menu planning and food safety.

Each week the two hour class is divided into about one hour of lecture and one hour of hands-on food preparation. Participants taste the dishes, then receive the ingredients so they can remake that dish at home.

Participants are raving about this exciting new program! For more information, please contact the GRACE Clinic at

Planning a Trip to Donation Station?

December 31st is to the Donation Station what April 15th is to the Post Office. Hundreds of cars, trucks and SUVs line up to make last minute donations before the new year. This year, we ask everyone who is planning to make that trip to consider doing it a little earlier. With limited staff and volunteers trying to handle the crush of donations on the 31st, you will likely have to wait in a very long line. Bringing your donations before December 31st will give you the same tax benefit without the hassle.

In addition, please package the items you are donating in disposable containers like trash bags or cardboard boxes.

"We are truly blessed to be in a community that is so willing to support others through the donation of their gently used items. We thank all of you for your generosity!"
-Debbie Haley, Director of Resale
