Mark's New Project
Hello!

Thanks for your interest in my book, "Lean Hospitals." You can now pre-order the 2nd edition on Amazon. The book is going through the editing and rework value stream, but it should be available by October. The revised cover is going to look like this.

You might note the subtitle has changed to "Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement."

We changed the last word from "Satisfaction" to "Engagement" because that's really what the book is about. We want people to be satisfied in the workplace, but that satisfaction ultimately comes from being engaged in work that's meaningful. Creating that alignment between staff members, patient needs, and organizational objectives is the real power of Lean. So, I think it makes sense to have the subtitle reflect that.

Oh, and the first edition is now available in Turkish (see the cover here). More translations to come.

I wrote a blog post last week that describes a few changes in my professional life. Please take a read if you are interested and share feeddback on the blog.

Finally, the subtitle has been finalized for my 2nd book: Healthcare Kaizen: Engaging Front-Line Staff in Sustainable Improvements. It will be out in early 2012. I'm currently writing and editing with my co-author, Joe Swartz. Please see this recent blog post that includes a great video on Kaizen from Masaaki Imai. The blog post also includes a call for people to share their Kaizen stories for possible inclusion in the book.

Good luck with your ongoing improvement efforts,

Mark Graban

Speaking Engagements
If you are interested in having to speak to your organization or at a conference, you can learn more and contact me here.

I can give a number of talks, ranging from the broad to the specific, and ranging from the serious to the fun side, such as my new keynote ("Warning: Signs! From Cautionary Circulars to Proactive Prevention") that I first presented in September to very positive reviews.

Here is a great video by Masaaki Imai, author of the classic books Kaizen: The Key To Japan's Competitive Success and Gemba Kaizen: A Commonsense, Low-Cost Approach to Management. Here, he emphasizes that kaizen means continuous improvement and he points out that a better definition would be everybody improving, everywhere, and every day. This is [...]...

I'm a proud graduate of Northwestern University, industrial engineering class of 1995. Our '95 commencement speaker was the newly installed president of the university... he delivered a pretty dry address and the students were pretty disappointed. That 1995 address was everything that the 2011 commencement address was not - this time delivered by TV's Stephen [...]...

Last week, at the 2nd annual Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit, I moderated the CEO Panel discussion that featured four excellent Lean leaders: Jim FitzPatrick of Mercy Medical Center (North Iowa), Scott Armstrong (Group Health), Alan Gleghorn (Christie Clinic), and Dr. Gary Kaplan (Virginia Mason). The CEOs shared a lot of insights, but one theme that [...]...

In today's post, I'm happy to introduce Dr. Les Muda, the World's First Lean Healthcare Comedian. First and perhaps the last. Dr. Muda sent me an audition tape after his experience at last week's successful Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit. As we chatted, we both agreed that the Summit was great... but what it lacked was [...]...

Today, I'm announcing an evolution of my work life: doing less with the Lean Enterprise Institute, doing more consulting and speaking, and starting to help build an exciting startup company, KaiNexus. The first 16 years of my career has been an interesting journey: General Motors, Dell, Honeywell and a total of 10 years in the [...]...

Yesterday, we lost a great guru in the process and business improvement worlds, Eliyahu M. Goldratt, who passed away at the age of 64. Goldratt is the author of many books including The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement. I'm sure this is a thought shared by many readers, but Goldratt, The Goal, and his "Theory [...]...

I met Newt Gingrich at the Ontario Hospital Association conference in late 2009, as I blogged about here: "Meeting Newt Gingrich, a Lean Champion." Yesterday morning, I was told that Newt had given an endorsement of the use of Lean and Six Sigma methods to help reduce waste in government, as reported here: "Newt Gingrich [...]...

We had a great first day at our Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit in Seattle (with lots of tweets from attendees you can follow along with). The Summit concludes with Day 2 today. One of the plenary presenters was Dr. Michel Ttreault, President & CEO of St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg. In his talk, some of [...]...

Ways to Buy "Lean Hospitals" (First Edition) in Different Formats

You can, of course, buy a traditional paperback version, but there are other buying options.

You can buy a secure PDF copy of my book "Lean Hospitals" via the DocStoc online service. Click here to see details and to buy.

You can buy the book through the Google Bookstore. These e-books are compatible on the Nook, Sony Reader, and other devices.

To buy a Kindle version, click here. These can be read on Kindles, iPads, PCs, Macs, and sorts of hardware.

For those who have asked about audio book versions, I would LOVE to do one. I am going to do a test with the newly revised Chapter 1 of Lean Hospitals, gathering data to help convince the publisher they should try this... let me know if you are interested in this format.

Lean Healthcare Map
I have an interactive global Google Map of healthcare organizations with documented Lean efforts. We have "pins" on the map from Thailand to South Africa to the UK. The map can be viewed through the URL www.leanmaps.com. It's a "group effort" where anyone can edit and add to the map.
