Free Webinar: Mistake-Proofing for Healthcare

On Thursday, December 10 at 2 PM Eastern, the Lean Enterprise Institute is presenting a free webinar on a powerful quality improvement method -- "Mistake Proofing."

Mistake Proofing to Prevent Medical Errors
By John Grout, PhD

Medical mistakes are the leading cause of accidental death in America. ("Dead by Mistake," Hearst Newspapers, Aug. 10, 2009.) Each year, an estimated 98,000 Americans die from preventable medical mistakes.

Sadly, some of those lives could have been saved with mistake-proofing methods as simple as color-coding medical tubes to avoid confusion.

Find out from John Grout, dean of the Campbell School of Business and an expert in mistake-proofing applications for healthcare, service, and manufacturing, how the lean methodology of mistake-proofing can help you deliver care to your patients in the safest, most effective way possible.

Specifically, you will learn:
  • The basics of what mistake-proofing is and is not
  • The different types of human errors and where mistake-proofing works best
  • How to mistake-proof healthcare processes to reduce or eliminate human errors
  • What has worked through lots of examples from various healthcare environments and patient pathways
  • How to implement mistake-proofing in your organization

Recent Network Meetings

On November 3-4, LEI and the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value sponsored its second healthcare meeting in Chicago for 22 healthcare organizations interested in joining a second Healthcare Value Leaders Network. Fifty people attended the conference and heard presentations by members of the existing Network. The group also created organization-specific A3s and an A3 for the new Network through the teaching and guidance of John Shook of LEI and Jack Billi from the University of Michigan.  The new Network will begin in the first quarter of 2010.

On November 5-6, the Healthcare Value Leaders Network sponsored a second deep-dive "gemba visit" for its members at Group Health Cooperative in Seattle, a Network member.  The visit showcased their work on Standard Work for Leaders. The visit was videotaped and made available on the private Network site for all members to view.  In addition, the Network trialed the first live video streaming from the Gemba visit for members who could not attend in person.

On November 20, the Network also sponsored a live video streaming event on "Hoshin Kanri" from ThedaCare.  Speaking from ThedaCare's Senior Leadership Visual Room, John Toussaint, CEO of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value, answered specific questions from a live audience about ThedaCare's journey in this methodology.  The network is planning to offer more events in 2010 utilizing this technology.
