Scholar struggles through loss to find success

india duncan. scholar spotlight 5.2010When I was a young child my father was killed. When I was 15, my mother passed away at age 45 from a brain aneurism. These particular moments in my life made me feel alone in the world, but they also made me strive for greatness even more.

Graduating from high school signified freedom and was a source of pride and joy for me, my three siblings, my aunt, and my grandmother with whom we lived. When I received my high school diploma, I could not help but look up into the sky and whisper to my mother, "I made it. Thank you."  I had endured three years of high school without the physical presence of my mother, but I knew that, spiritually, she stood by me. The memory of my mother's struggles and hardships have fueled my ambition.

Now I am a biology major at St. Mary's College of Maryland. I am expected to graduate in 2013 and I plan to pursue a career in Veterinarian Medicine. CollegeBound has helped me financially, providing me with a Last Dollar Grant, which is generously matched by St. Mary's. The CollegeBound staff has also been very helpful, providing support, encouragement and feedback.

I know my mom would be proud of all that I have accomplished and of my plans for the future.

India Duncan is a 2009 graduate of Merganthaler Vo-Tech High School and is finishing her freshman year at St. Mary's College of Maryland. She is the recipient of a CollegeBound Foundation Last Dollar Grant.

Summer internships offer valuable experience

For high school and college students, summer provides a great opportunity to explore careers and gain valuable experience in their fields of interest. Internships are a great way to test the waters.

Frequently Asked Questions about Internships
What is an internship?
An internship is an educational experience in an environment providing field application of a student's classroom learning. It may be done on a full- or part-time basis during a regular semester, summer term or combination of terms. It may or may not be conducted concurrently with other academic coursework.

What are the benefits of an internship?
>> Application of classroom learning to the workplace.
>> Exploration of career options.
>> Development and enhancement of professional skills.
>> An increase of self confidence as a student or worker.
>> An opportunity to practice job search skills and expand networks of professional contacts.
>> Relevant work experience to add to your resume which demonstrates interest and commitment to a specific field.
>> A chance to earn money to help pay for educational expenses.
>> An opportunity for leadership and character development.

Are internships paid?
Some internships are paid, however the majority are not. Also, compensation can vary. Interns may be paid a wage or a tax-free stipend, provided with housing or reimbursed for mileage or other expenses. If you are looking for an interesting and useful experience as an intern, it would be wise not to limit the search to paid positions. Consider the experience an investment in your education and future career.

When is the best time to begin planning for an internship?
Students should begin planning their internships at least the semester before they plan to do the internship. So, students just starting the search now for summer positions may be behind the ball, but many opportunities are still available. Begin your search by visiting the websites listed above.
