Scholars of the Week enjoy some air time

Each year CollegeBound recognizes a talented, hard working senior scholar from each of the Baltimore City public high schools we serve. The Scholar of the Week program is made possible by a grant from the Travelers Foundation, which is matched by the Fox45/CWBaltimore television station. Our "college bound" scholars will be recognized during a 10 week broadcasting schedule on Fox45 and CWBaltimore. Scholar follows his dream to NY
This self described "big guy" fits right into this even "bigger city"

By Marcus Bailey
CollegeBound Scholar

Marcus Bailey. march scholar spotlightI am a junior living my dream in New York City, attending the Fashion Institute of Technology thanks to a partnership program with University of Maryland Eastern Shore. I am enjoying the city atmosphere, the architecture and most importantly, the fashion! I am here to break into one of the most competitve, everchanging industries on the planet. Heidi Klum describes this fickle business perfectly:  "One day you're in and the next day you're out."  It is cliché to say this, but fashion is my passion, so that is why I put in extreme amounts of hard work and brave the cutthroat ranks.

The partnership between F.I.T. and UMES allows me a pivotal opportunity to spend my junior year working on my career, getting my foot in the door, and discovering who I truly am.  So far I'm achieving these goals and more. I have been able to attend Fashion Week at Bryant Park in 2009 and 2010, network with industry professionals, and take relevant, interesting classes. I have seen that I have what it takes and I can definitely do this.

I'm currently interning at OBO Global, a luxury production company that produces high-end events within the fashion industry. The company does everything from runway shows to store openings. In the 2010 Fashion Week we produced 15 runway shows!  From DKNY to G Star RAW, we did it. I did it. This is my dream coming full circle. Hard work, sleepless nights and countless cups of Starbucks coffee later, I am discovering that this big city is a perfect match for this big guy.
