In our March 2009 eNews issue, we shined a spotlight on scholar Kevin Poist who wrote a first-person story about his travels to South Africa and India. Kevin's story traveled to the inbox of International Family Magazine, where it was featured on their website.

Congratulations, Kevin, on your first publication. We are sure that life has much in store for you!

For one scholar, college builds self esteem

 By Shepherd Solomon, CollegeBound Scholar

shepherd solomon - sept 09 scholar spotlightDuring my childhood I dealt with tons of obstacles that challenged me mentally and emotionally.  In grade school, my peers teased me about my voice and looks. Even though teasing is something every kid deals with, it destroyed my self-image. I thought I wasn't good enough and I worked overtime to try to please my peers. This cycle continued into high school, but during my senior year everything changed. My focus switched from struggling to interact with my peers to thinking about life after high school. At that time I wanted to go to college, because it is what society said I should do. But I thought, "Why should I go?"

My CollegeBound counselor Ms. Jamie Tang (now a Retention Specialist) helped me answer that question. She said college will create new opportunities for me, enhance my skills, build up my self esteem, and allow me to meet new people.  After she explained that to me, it seemed like it was my destiny to attend a university. I graduated from Mergenthaler High School in 2007 and attended Morgan State University as a business/economics major.

College was a big adjustment for me, and I had issues with time management.  But, CollegeBound was there to assist me with my problems, and they came to check on me every month. They helped me learn to management my time and responsibilities which let me relax, focus on my priorities, and create goals for myself. My five-year goal is to be an underwriter for Travelers Insurance, and my ten-year goal is to own an insurance business, because I know it is an everlasting market.

Now, after everything I've learned from Morgan State and from College Bound, I am looking forward to employment after college and later becoming a business owner and giving back to my community.

Shepherd is a junior at Morgan State University and a recipient of CollegeBound's Last Dollar Grant. He has maintained a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

November is College Awareness Month
CollegeBound celebrates with contest and awards ceremony

To celebrate November as College Awareness Month, CollegeBound is hosting an art, essay and poetry contest for Baltimore City public elementary and middle school students. The contest's theme is "What College Means to Me." Teachers are encouraged to use the contest to spark discussions about college and students' dreams for the future. We believe that "you're never too young to be college bound!"

The deadline for entries is October 2, and teachers may download the entry form and contest rules
here. The contest winners will be announced at the College Awareness Month Kickoff & Awards Ceremony at the National Aquarium in Baltimore on October 29. Winners are awarded gifts and all attendees are treated to a dolphin show!

Lawyers' Campaign kicks off at M&T Bank Stadium

CollegeBound's annual Lawyers' Campaign is an important fundraising event in which local attorneys volunteer to solicit donations through their firms and network of co-workers.

We kicked off the beginning of the campaign Tuesday at M&T Bank Stadium, and the event continues until December 31. Our volunteers heard inspirational words from an alumni scholar and Honorary Co-Chairs Sue Leviton, Professor of Law at University of Maryland School of Law, and Byron Warnken, Professor of Law at University of Baltimore School of Law. Afterwards, the whole group was treated to a tour of M&T Bank Stadium. This year's campaign kickoff was literally at the 50 yard line!
