New Help for Kids in Western Kansas

The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services has selected KVC to provide psychiatric care for children in 51 counties from Salina west to the Colorado line.  KVC will open a 24-bed children's psychiatric hospital in Hays this spring. The facility will employ approximately 40 staff, mostly behavioral healthcare professionals.

Kelley McMahon"KVC has successfully provided these services for youth in eastern Kansas who would have otherwise been served by the state's Rainbow Mental Health Facility since 2007," said SRS Secretary Don Jordan.  "I'm confident they will be able to replicate this success in western Kansas as well."

KVC provides services for children in eastern Kansas through the STAR program on the KVC psychiatric services campus for children and adolescents in Wyandotte County.  Learn more---

Children in the Center School District in Kansas City, Missouri, now have access to mental health services through KVC.  Center School Dist. logoWhen a mental health need arises for a student, Center staff contact New Directions Behavioral Health.  New Directions then refers the child and family to KVC or another provider.

KVC in-home family therapists work with the children and parents to help them make behavior changes to reach a healthy balance.  "We have high poverty and a high need in our community," said Betty McKinzie, Director of Student Services for Center School District.  "This is a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to get connected to services."

KVC also provides mental healthcare to school districts in Independence, Missouri, and Gardner, Kansas.
