Dr. Kathleen M. Heubner Announces Her Retirement
When asked if we could announce the news of her upcoming retirement, Dr. Huebner sent the following announcement, written in her own inimitable style:
"Dr. Kathleen M. Huebner, professor and director of the National Consortium for Leadership in Sensory Disabilities, and former associate dean for the Salus University College of Education and Rehabilitation, has announced her retirement.
Dr. Huebner served Salus University for 19 years. She is retiring in her now-permanent home in Saddlebrooke, AZ, just north of Tucson. She plans to become active in her new community, enjoy the reading of 'non-academic' books, renew her production of fine embroidery, learn about the Sonoran desert, and volunteer. Dr. Huebner plans to continue some of her work in the field of blindness serving on various boards and consulting.
Last month, Dr. Huebner was awarded the M.C. Migel Award, the highest award given to a professional in the field of blindness by the American Foundation for the Blind."
Thank you, Dr. Huebner for your service to PCO and Salus. Congratulations, too, on being the recipient of the most prestigious award in the field of blindness and low vision. All the best as you enjoy this well-deserved time for yourself. You will be missed! _________________

Salus Names New President

By a unanimous vote of the Board of Directors, Admiral Michael H. Mittelman, OD '80, MPH, has been named president of Salus University. He will succeed President Thomas L. Lewis. The announcement to the University's faculty, students, alumni and staff was made by Board of Trustees Chair Jo Surpin, who thanked the members of the search committee for their efforts.
With 32 years as a senior healthcare executive in the US Navy, Admiral Mittelman brings a wealth of experience to Salus that encompasses both clinical and research. Ms. Surpin noted that his vision for the University--to become the nation's leading provider of high quality, vital healthcare professionals--is very much in keeping with the Salus mission and credo.
Admiral Mittelman remains on active duty with the Navy until next year. He will not begin his appointment as Salus University president until he fulfills all of his military commitments, which may be sometime in late spring or early summer 2013.
In order to accommodate this timing and insure a smooth transition, Dr. Lewis has agreed to remain as president during this period. As president-designate, Admiral Mittelman will be in regular contact with Dr. Lewis and will be in Elkins Park on occasion, when time and his current service obligations permit.
A native of Long Beach, NY, Admiral Mittelman and his wife, Tanis, are the parents of three daughters.

PA Students Reach Out

After the educational and business components of the annual conference of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), IMPACT 2012 in Toronto, in May, assistant professor Danny Scott, MPAS, PA-C, and Salus PA students decided to unwind at a Toronto Blue Jays game.
As fate would have it, they were seated in front of a five-year-old boy, Aiden, and his grandparents. The students learned that the little boy's father had died only two weeks before and that his grandparents were trying to keep his spirits up. In a spontaneous gesture, the Salus group pooled their money and bought Aiden an official MLB Toronto Blue Jays shirt and a big #1 hand to mark his first major league baseball game.
Mr. Scott received the photo shown here from Aiden's grandmother, Donna Birkett, who thanked the group, writing "the kindness of strangers is an amazing thing." In an email forwarding the note from Aiden's grandmother, Mr. Scott told his students, "I am very proud of you for your incredible kindness, your compassion . . . Your simple gesture to a sweet little boy is exactly what sets physician assistants apart from other healthcare providers."
The students, all members of the Class of 2012 graduating in September, were Brooke Erickson, Jennifer Fratz, Christine Gerges, Christine Hollenbeck, Michael Kozlowski, Keri Kres, Emma Madden, Melissa Otte, Andrew Paszko and Alyson Shields. |
