AAPA President Visits Campus

Pictured above with AAPA President Wooten (center) are PA Class of 2013 student leaders (L to R): TinaMarie Gregorio, Joshua Gilgen, Lara Espin, Jahvel Thompson, Paula Foreman and Kevin Kear.
Robert Wooten, PA-C, president of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) visited the University and met with physician assistant students on campus last month.
After a lunch-time meeting with the Physician Assistant (PA) program director and faculty, Mr. Wooten debuted a new AAPA video that spoke to the rapid growth of the profession and featured a variety of specialties within it.
PA program director, Dr. Richard Vause, said Mr. Wooten spoke to the students about the difficult path of PA schooling, and told the students they all have the potential to be successful if they "focus on what is important and not get wrapped up in trivia." Mr. Woooten stressed the fact that physician assistants are part of today's health care team and must adapt the "team mind set" in order to succeed. Leadership in the AAPA and within the profession was also discussed, as was the concept of life long learning. A question and answer period was held after Mr. Wooten's presentation. |

The second scholarship will go to a fourth year audiology student who is in an externship at a cochlear implant center. Applicants for the scholarships should follow the instructions in the Admissions Process, Scholarships Section. |
Lensometry Olympics 2012 The annual Lensometry Olympics took place last month. According to Dr. Anne-Marie Lahr, assistant professor and contest creator, 44 students participated in the qualifying rounds, and the top ten in that group competed the next evening.
The Team Optics Teaching Assistants developed an Excel program that scored the competitors on accuracy and speed. There were two "heats" of five, with the top qualifiers getting to pick which round and which station they preferred. Competitors neutralized the distance and near portion of a bifocal, took monocular pupillary distance measurements (the patient they were to use this procedure wandered around the crowded room to make this more interesting!), they evaluated a prescription for vertical prism, another for horizontal prism and measured base curve. Pictured above are this year's winners: gold medalist Meghan Graveline '15, silver medalist Fady Rizk '15 and bronze medalist Cassandra Liew '15. All winners received a Kindle Fire from Hoya - and were exempted from taking the upcoming practical exam. The "medals" were uncut spectacle lenses made by Dr. Lahr and Bobby Atkinson of the Technical Services department. This year's event was well attended by teaching assistants and first year students. A slideshow of photos of the competition, taken by Eric Zhou '14OD, will be available on the University's website by early next week at http://www.salus.edu/news/opt_News.html. |

The SOSH Eye BOWL-A-RAMA by Angelica V. Delgado '14OD
On February 18, SOSH (Student Optometric Service to Humanity) hosted the SOSH Eye BOWL-A-RAMA at Thunderbird Lanes in Willow Grove. It was a fun-filled night with eight teams consisting of 45 bowlers, two hours of unlimited bowling, prizes and fun. Eight weeks in planning, the event was all in the spirit of raising funds for our mission trip this August to El Salvador.
The fun-filled evening was made possible by the generous support of students and the community. Bowling lane sponsors were: HEINE, Linda Jean's Café, Susquehanna Bank, The Daily Grind, The Eye Care Center and Dr. Sona Kalra '09. On behalf of SOSH, we thank them for their support. Food and beverages were provided by Linda Jean's Café and by SOSH members. As students bowled the night away, raffles were held throughout the night, giving away what every optometry student's heart desires: framed "Eye Anatomy" posters. The lucky winners: Jared Scheff '15OD and Eugene Wong '14OD. Enjoy - and memorize it!
Students and friends were able to relieve some stress by knocking down some pins in support of a worthy cause. The winning team of the night - coming in at average score of 170 - was Team Mario, which included Class of 2104 optometry students, Havish Bhalani, Hanh Ngo, An Huynh, Crystal SooJung Pae, and Huy Pham. They all took home an Applebee's gift card.
Our first place winner was Physician Assistant student Brittany McGinnis '14PA, coming in with an impressive average of 190, and taking home a Starbucks gift package. A great prize to help her late night study hours!
The rest of our winners received gift certificates provided by local businesses. Second place winner and the only first year OD student of the night, Jared Scheff '15, coming in with an average score of 180, was awarded a gift certificate to Rosey's BBQ. In third place, optometry student Havish Bhalani '14, received gift certificate to Jules' Thin Crust, while fourth place finisher, optometry student Huy Pham '14, received a gift certificate to Joey's Tate Restaurant. We thank you for your participation!
Bowling is a great away to bring people together and away from their cubicles. Due to the success of BOWL-A-RAMA and positive feedback from participants, we hope to make this an annual event. We would like to thank everyone who participated in making this event one of our most enjoyable nights of fundraising. SOSH relies heavily on fundraisers such as bowling to make their mission possible and we could not have done it without you! We will continue to fundraise throughout the year and make more memorable nights like this. Bowling for Sight is just the beginning! |

Optometry Accreditation Visit
Three of PCO's four on-campus residency programs are due for re-accreditation this year. The week prior to the visit of the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE), PCO dean Dr. Linda Casser addressed the significance of the accreditation team's visit in an internal announcement:
The two person team serves as the "eyes and ears" of the Council. After their visit, the team submits a report of its site visit to the Council liaison, so that the programs can be considered for re-accreditation by the full Council.
The majority of the ACOE team's time was spent at The Eye Institute, with a visit to Elkins Park and a tour of the facilities there. Dean Casser thanked the individuals who worked hard to develop the self-study and prepared for the team's visit: Dr. Michael Rebar; Dr. Shital Mani; Ms. Marilyn Daltry; Dr. Holly Myers; Mr. Ken Rookstool; Ms. Aliceanne Manning; the 2011-12 class of on-campus residents; Dr. Sarah Appel; Dr. Mitch Scheiman; Dr. Ruth Shoge; Dr. John Baker and Dr. Janice Scharre.
