PA Students Surprise Dr. Di Stefano
In December, the Physician Assistant students surprised vice president of Academic Affairs, Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano. Notified by Daniel Scott, MPAS, PA-C, DFAAPA, PA faculty advisor, that the Classes of 2012 and 2013 had "an early Christmas gift" for him, Dr. Di Stefano arrived at the meeting. There, class presidents, Nellie Kippley '12PA and Crystal Halloran '13PA, presented him with a certificate of appreciation from the newly named Anthony Di Stefano Physician Assistant Student Society. The Salus chapter is part of the national Physician Assistant Student Society (PASS) organization. According to Mr. Scott, the students "wanted to recognize Dr. Di Stefano's vision in creating the Physician Assistant Studies program at Salus." (Pictured above left to right are: Andrew Paszko '12PA, Mr. Scott, Dr. Di Stefano and Mike Kozlowski '12PA).

Low Vision Grant Awarded
The Feinbloom Center at The Eye Institute received a $20,000 grant from BNY Mellon for use in the satellite clinics of its pediatric low vision program. The grant was provided through the generosity of the Rae S. Uber Trust, a BNY Mellon Mid-Atlantic Charitable Trust and will be used to expand the satellite program to include additional sites, as well as to help increase access to low vision services and devices, eyeglasses and evaluations for those in need. Currently, many sites and schools don't have the necessary access to these services. According to associate professors Marcy Graboyes and Dr. Sarah Appel, this grant will help add 10 low vision mobile clinics - with a portion allocated for glasses and low vision mobile devices - over the next 18 months. With an emphasis on school programs that lack adequate funding, helping 40 to 50 more students with low vision and providing several hundred pairs of eyeglasses also will be included. The grant will have a significant impact, with critical changes for the children they serve who are visually impaired.

NOSA Meets Future ODs
In what has become an annual NOSA (National Optometric Student Association) event, 12 members participated in an "ODs of Tomorrow/Science Day" at the Sheppard Elementary School in December.
The PCO students gave a presentation that stressed the importance of doing well in school and spoke about the value of science and the importance of vision. To the delight of most - if not all - of the students, an eye dissection was performed as a visual supplement to a verbal lesson in the anatomic parts of the eye. (see above) NOSA members also distributed gift bags that contained school supplies and costume glasses to the students.

Wormington Winter Fun Run
The PCO chapter of the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) is excited to announce the inaugural Wormington Winter Fun Run. The event will be held on January 28 at 10:00 a.m. in Alverthorpe Park in Abington Pa. (approx three miles from campus). According to AOSA trustee James Deom '13OD, the event is "centered around one of our professors who, very famously, has produced one of the most used and accurate near reading cards in optometric care. We are very proud of Dr. Wormington." He notes that the Wormington Card is used in every PCO student's first semester.
Saying AOSA members believe having the students and local doctors "bring and run with their Wormington Card held high is a fun, silly, and attractive spin to the usual 5k race," James advises "all proceeds from this run will help support PCO students wanting to set up area vision screenings and to participate in continuing education meetings." The entry fee is $20.00 before the race and $25.00 on race day. Participants will receive refreshments and an "awesome Wormington Run shirt." AOSA is hoping for participation from local doctors and recent graduates.
