Audiology Library Expands
The Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) recently received two donations of journal collections to help expand their library.
Sonic Innovations, Inc. contributed journals personally compiled by OCA Dean Victor Bray, which were given to the company when he was VP and Chief Audiology Officer there.
According to Dr. Bray, the College can now archive journals that extend into the 1950s.
A second collection was received from Dr. Robert Sataloff, lead physician of Philadelphia Ear, Nose and Throat Associates. Both collections are being inventoried for the University library.

PCO's National Quiz Bowl Champ

Ian McWherter '12, won the Varilux
Optometry Student Bowl XX challenge at the American Optometry Association's annual conference in Salt Lake City last month.
Always well attended by students from all participating schools supporting their representative, this year's contest proved to be even more exciting than usual.
PCO students in flourescent yellow T-shirts and hats carrying noisemakers and posters yelled, stomped and whisteld, as they stood on chairs and cheered their classmate on to victory. Ian was there to bring it home for PCO and he did, outscoring challengers from the 21 other North American colleges and schools of optometry.
This highly anticipated contest is one of the highlights of the conference for optometry students and conference attendees alike. Each student group designs their school's T-shirt and all of the students wear them to the competition. The audience in the front section of the room is a riot of color, as each college has a section reserved for its students, guaranteeing them a good view. The noise level before the contest is very high, with chants and cheers and noisemakers adding to the festivities.
Along with the pride and thanks of his classmates and fellow students for winning this year's championship, Ian was awarded a $1,000 prize and he brought the crystal Essilor/Variilux trophy back to Elkins Park. For more event photos.

CER Students on Campus
Classes of students from the University's College of Education and Rehabilitation (CER) have been on campus since June, learning to apply classroom knowledge they have acquired throughout the year to real life situations.
The hands-on coursework yields many opportunities for CER student learning. For example, Orientation and Mobility students learn how to instruct individuals in the use of canes, and how to teach safe navigation of streets, public transportation, grocery stores and other settings.
Low Vision Therapy students' summer course work includes activities such as blindfold simulation, where writing, cooking, eating, sewing and other tasks are practiced with blindfolds and simulated low vision goggles in the CER Living Skills lab.

Cerumen Management Workshop

The George S. Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) hosted a Pennsylvania Academy of Audiology (PAA) Cerumen Management Workshop for the first time on Salus University's campus July 21, 22, and 23.
For two days, second year audiology students had the opportunity to examine volunteer patients selected earlier that week at the Pennsylvania Ear Institute. On Friday, audiologists from the PAA were on campus to participate in a continuing education workshop just for their membership.
The PAA seminar, taught by OCA adjunct Rita Chaiken, AuD, provided audiologists with information on the properties and characteristics of cerumen, while they also had the opportunity to take part in an interactive session with equipment.
All proceeds generated from this workshop will benefit the Pennsylvania Academy of Audiology. In light of the enthusiastic response to this workshop, the PAA and the College hope to make this an annual event. |

First Preceptor Fair
An optometry preceptor fair hosted by the PCO Externship Program was held for the first time in early June on campus. The event, sponsored by Alcon and ISTA Pharmaceuticals, had nearly 40 preceptors in attendance. Students from the Classes of 2013 and 2014 were invited to meet with potential preceptors and engage in a variety of essential activities throughout the day.
Dr. James Fanelli '85, was honored as the 2011-2012 PCO Preceptor of the Year for his dedication and exceptional teaching. Former externs of Dr. Fanelli have often recognized him for his ability to incorporate their studies into everyday clinical management of cases. A current PCO adjunct, Dr. Fanelli also runs a private practice in coastal North Carolina, where he specializes in ocular disease management.
According to Dr. Maria Parisi, director of the Externship Program, not only did students benefit from the event, but many preceptors provided positive feedback on their experiences and how beneficial it was for them to attend. Many preceptors expressed how informative the day was and, though it took place on a Sunday, was well worth their time to come and meet potential externs.
According to PCO dean, Dr. Linda Casser, this fair was a substantive step forward in the College's commitment to continuous enhancement of the Externship Program. Dr. Casser extended enthusiastic thanks to all who helped, saying without their leadership, teamwork, collective time commitment and effort, this fair would not have been possible. |

Project Foresight Winners

A team of second-year PCO students,
Abby Brubaker '14 and Jimmy Deom '14, won the Second Annual Project Foresight Competition in July.
This national competition, established by Walmart, requires two member teams to design and develop a business plan for their envisioned practice of the future. The plan must demonstrate how it will promote the optometric profession, while incorporating the teachings of the students' college of optometry. The plan also must incorporate the values and vision of Walmart Health and Wellness: to provide quality, affordable and accessible healthcare for everyone.
Abby and Jimmy's plan, "Collegiate Eye Care," was a first ever fully recognized non-profit organization aimed at educating college students about the importance of regular eye exams, as well as providing that service on-site at various colleges and universities.
After being selected from six PCO competing teams to represent the College in the national competition in Salt Lake City, Abby and Jimmy each received an expense-paid trip to present their business plan to a panel of national judges at Optometry's Meeting of the American Optometric Association.
Among the 11 optometry schools represented in the competition, the PCO duo's plan was selected as the winner. Abby and Jimmy split the $20,000 top prize. Both said they were excited to represent PCO in such a positive manner, but were still "in complete shock considering the competition had so many talented students with great ideas."
Walmart representatives will visit the Elkins Park campus in September for the official presentation of the trophy.
