Farewells
Dr. Andrew Buzzelli, associate professor and director of Advanced Studies at PCO, has accepted an appointment as assistant dean for Academic Affairs at the Rosenberg College of Optometry at the University of the Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, Texas, and will take a year's leave to transition and evaluate this new position. In addition to his teaching and the development of the Advanced Studies courses, Dr. Buzzelli has served as the faculty representative to the University's Board of Trustees for two years and also as chair of the University's Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee.
Students, faculty and staff of the Osborne College of Audiology recently said goodbye and thank you to Dr. Jim McDonald, adjunct faculty, who is leaving that position to devote more time to his private audiology practice. For more than ten years, Dr. McDonald has traveled from Baltimore, Maryland to Elkins Park to teach several courses each semester, and he was one of the original AuDonline faculty members recruited by George Osborne.

Reunion 2011
Alumni came to Elkins Park last month for the opportunity to visit for the first time or re-visit the campus, check on the progress of renovations at The Eye Institute and, most importantly, spend some time with old friends.
Held on April 30, this year's reunion offered tours of The Eye Institute's newly renovated patient care area, which were in their final stages of completion.
During the day, tours of the Elkins Park campus allowed many alumni to see it for the first time, while a buffet luncheon allowed time to visit with former classmates.
That evening, a faculty cocktail reception allowed many to meet former faculty members and mentors, resulting in the telling of shared experiences and much laughter.
The reception was followed by the awarding of the Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year award to Joseph P. Shovlin, OD '80, FAAO, DNAP.
Dr. Shovlin, a senior optometrist at Northeastern Eye Institute in Scranton, has been in practice since 1985. Before making the presentation, alumni president Dr. John Ochsenreither '88, pointed out in his remarks that the list of Dr. Shovlin's accomplishments was so extensive, it was a challenge to choose just those few that were listed in the program. Members of Dr. Shovlin's family, including his wife, their two children and his in-laws attended the dinner.
Over the years Dr. Shovlin has served as a preceptor for third and fourth PCO students. One of those students, recent PCO alumna and TEI resident Alissa M. Coyne, OD '10, spoke of her gratitude for all that she had learned during her externship with Dr. Shovlin.
BJ Nibert, OD '81 and The Lost Cause band provided live music for the evening's entertainment, with casino games providing additional entertainment. For reunion slideshow.

The China Project by Alexis Abate
Shown at left during a panel discussion are: Ms. Van Naerssen (second from left); Dr. Appel (third from left) and Ms. Wen (fourth from left).
For the past six years, Salus University's faculty, alumni, students and staff have evaluated visually impaired children at Overbrook School for the Blind (OSB). During this time, they've integrated a system where students, parents, teachers and doctors alike are engaged in each individual patient's progress.
With this model in mind, Salus alumna Judy Van Naerssen MS '95 (low vision rehabilitation), Overbrook's coordinator of Therapy and Orientation and Mobility programs and her colleague, Ms. Wen Ru Niu, OSB International Program coordinator, asked PCO associate professor, Sarah Appel, OD, to collaborate on the school's China project and bring this concept overseas.
In a country where regular eye care examinations are uncommon, visual and mobility aids are not used enough, education is not individualized and classrooms are void of orientation and mobility specialists, the need for resources is essential.
The team's visit to China was eye-opening. Children with visual impairments, who were often overlooked, were encouraged to be active participants in their own health and were shown a whole new world of possibilities. The project challenged not only students, but encouraged adaptations in the classroom and at home. "The most special thing about this trip," said Dr. Appel, "is that you had an audience filled with students, parents, teachers and physicians coming together to look at the effects of eye diseases on vision and learning."
The three continue to share information with local doctors and refer students and teachers to appropriate resources. |

Dr. Fitzgerald Mission to Peru
John J. Fitzgerald III, DO, medical director for the Physician Assistant program, will be going to Peru in June on a two-week humanitarian mission with Mercy Global Ministry of Newtown Square, PA, which is part of Catholic Health East. Dr. Fitzgerald is hopeful that this mission will determine if future missions can include Salus PA students.
The group, which also includes PCO alumnus Dr. Arthur Chapman '71, includes doctors, surgical teams, nurses, physician assistants, optometrists, podiatrists and other healthcare professionals. They will be helping patients in remote areas who do not have access to healthcare.
Many supplies are needed and members of the group are working hard to collect them. These supplies include prescriptive and over the counter supplies as simple as band aids and benedryl. The need is great for supplies we take for granted in this country. With little effort, you can help.
If you have questions, please contact Dr. Fitzgerald at 215.780.1520 or jfitzgerald@salus.edu. With prior arrangements, supplies can be dropped off in Elkins Park until June 10. For a list of needed supplies.
Monetary donations are always welcome. |

PCO Quiz Bowl

In April, the gym at the Hafter Student Community Center was abuzz, as students, faculty and staff gathered for the PCO Quizbowl.
Organized by Dr. Anne-Marie Lahr, assistant professor, and sponsored by the Pennsylvania Optometric Association (POA), the event brought together students who wanted the chance to represent PCO at the Essilor/Varilux QuizBowl Challenge at the American Optometric Association's annual conference.
With POA judges Drs. Kim Even, Scott Goldberg, Lori Gray and Jon Marberger, and Dr. Lahr as emcee, Class of 2013 students Somatra Chhoeng, Vera Dham, Jed Ellwood, Kathleen Kinzley, My Le, Talia Mishkin and Marshall Walker answered questions until Jed Ellwood emerged victorious.
This year's winner will represent PCO in next year's competition, allowing Jed to observe what happens this year at the national competition when Ian McWherter '12, represents PCO.
After the competition, the POA hosted optometry students for dinner in the Café. For a slideshow.
