APOLOGIA
It was reported last month that the FEDOPTO Congress was held in Bogota, Columbia instead of Colombia. Dr. Derek Mladenovich can attest that his invitation to speak at the Congress required more travel than a day trip to NYC. Our apologies, both to Dr. Mladenovich and to Colombia.

Orientation 2010: Welcome Classes of 2014 and 2012
The University's Orientation Week
for optometry, audiology and physician assistant students begins with a White Coat ceremony. This year's August 16 ceremony welcomed 223 incoming students into the optometry (161), audiology (18), and physician assistant (44) programs.
After welcomes from University president Dr. Thomas L. Lewis and vice president for Academic Affairs Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano, the event's keynote speaker, Dr. A. Norman Haffner '52, founding dean and past president of SUNY Optometry addressed the students and their guests. An acknowledged expert in public health, Dr. Haffner taught the first public health course at PCO in the 1960s. He is a past president of the Public Health Association of New York City and established the Vision Care section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) in 1979.
After donning their white coats, students were congratulated by the head of their program: Dr. Victor Bray, dean of the Osborne College of Audiology, Dr. Linda Casser, dean of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry or Dr. Richard C. Vause, director of the Physician Assistant program.
This year's students range in age from 21 to 40 years, hail from 34 states and Canada, and were chosen from a combined applicant pool of 3,163. The optometry and physician assistant programs welcomed 13 students who are related to PCO alumni (parent, grandparent, or cousin).
The rest of orientation week included daily seminars and evening social activities such as picnics and a Phillies game. Pictured above: Osborne College of Audiology Class of 2014. |

University Faculty Development Day
The first Faculty Development Day, held at the Hafter Student Community Center this month, featured inter-active workshops and a presentation by Dr. Enoch Hale of the Foundation for Critical Thinking.
The University's academic calendar contains two annual faculty development days - one in August and one in January, according to Dr. Lorraine Lombardi, Associate Dean, Faculty Affairs and Post-Graduate Education. "These days are meant to celebrate our faculty and their commitment to teaching, learning and scholarship," she explained.
An ad hoc committee, formed with members selected by the deans and directors of each college/program includes Dr. Victor Bray (Osborne College of Audiology); Dr. Lynn Greenspan (Pennsylvania College of Optometry); Ms. Linda Haffelfinger (Physician Assistant program, College of Health Sciences); Dr. Fabiana Perla (College of Education and Rehabilitation), and Dr. Brooke Smith, FOSU (Faculty Organization of Salus University).
The committee created a survey that was sent to all faculty members. The "excellent response" to the survey indicated strong interest in critical thinking, the generational gap and several other topics amongst the faculty, according to Dr. Lombardi, the committee chairperson.
A wine and cheese event was held in the Bennett Lounge of the Hafter Center the night before. Faculty whose clinical schedules did not allow attendance the next day had the opportunity to meet the presenter and get together with colleagues. Participants in the day long event were given a survey at the end of the day which got a rating of excellent from the attendees. Dr. Lombardi and the committee will meet to choose the next development day topic soon. The faculty development day will be January 7, 2011, with a faculty social event to be held the evening of January 6. Faculty will be advised of details for both dates in advance. |
SAA Members Busy
During Orientation Week, members of the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) at the University's Osborne College of Audiology (OCA) welcomed the Class of 2014 with an icebreaker picnic designed to bring together incoming students and their second year mentors (pictured above).
The student driven, student designed mentoring program is an opportunity for second year students to share their experience and knowledge with first years, according to SAA president Theresa Mameh '12. Members of the organizing committee developed and distributed a survey to new students and second year student mentoring volunteers. Based on survey answers, a student committee matched mentorees and mentors. The picnic proved to be a relaxed venue for students to get to know one another, and the organization hopes this is the beginning of an OCA tradition. To see more photos, go to http://saa-oca.blogspot.com/. In keeping with the SAA tradition of commuity service, a hearing screening was held in July at a Children's Health Fair. Six students and a faculty preceptor participated, with Megan Myers '12 giving a presentation to the small patients that proved popular. (For video of Megan). Other student particpants were Nicole Deweese '12, Kelly Flaherty '13, Andy Lau '13, Stefanie Natelson '13 and Katie Steinhafel '12.
In October, the annual Walk4Hearing charity fundraiser will be held in Newtown Square, Delaware County, PA on September 25. The members of the Salus SAA chapter are urging fellow students and the rest of the University community to participate in a fun morning for a great cause. To find out more:

NOSA Schedule of Activities The Pennsylvania College of Optometry chapter of NOSA (National Optometric Students Association) has been very active lately and shows no signs on slowing down.
A July vision screening at the Triumph Baptist Church saw the following student participants: Class of 2012 students Michelle Brooks, Yung Chen and Nwamaka Ngoddy and Class of 2013 students Mariem Abdou, Nadine Bloomfield, Mindy Chow, Andrea Del Corro, Lola Fapojuwo, Suemayah Gouda, Keion Mark, Martina Ogunkorode, Diviya Patel, Sita Patel, Asantewa Patterson, Tuong-Vi Pham, Terrence Roberts, Charlene St. Clair and Joey Tran.
According to chapter president, Erica Turner, '13, the first NOSA BBQ for students, family members and faculty, held on September 11, was a great success. The kick off for a clothing drive for Covenant House in Germantown, PA was attended by Ms. Janice Mignogna, NOSA faculty advisor and more than 50 students and family members, many of whom "came . . .with clothing and shoes." Ms. Turner noted that "the barbecue could not have been a success without the support of the Salus University Community and our sponsors, WalMart, Giant and Acme."
A dditionally, over the past few weeks members have held a Red Cross blood drive, a general body meeting and a vision screening. NOSA has a lot of activities scheduled for the next few months, giving optometry students even more opportunities to get involved and support some worthy causes.
Future NOSA events include:
Fright Fest Fundraiser September 20-22
Big Brother/Big Sister Potluck October 1
Fright Fest October 1 7:30p.m. Mural tour of Philadelphia October 3
Phila Diversity Mixer October 22 (Upbar at Marathon)
