| Commencements 2010!
Pictured (left to right) are: Dr. Thomas L. Lewis, president; Ms. Jo Surpin, Board chairperson; Dr. Fred H. Bess; Mrs. Joan Osborne; Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano, VP for Academic Affairs and Dr. Victor Bray, dean, Osborne College of Audiology.
Osborne College of Audiology, May 21
The Audiology Class of 2010 had 368 distance and seven residential graduates. More than 200 students received their diplomas in a ceremony at Congregation Keneseth Israel synagogue in Elkins Park.
Many distance Audiology graduates and their families came to campus for a day that included tours of the University and the Pennsylvania Ear Institute, a buffet lunch in the Hafter Center and much mingling of students and faculty - many of whom had never met in person.
Before the commencement program began, a moment of silence was held for the late Alison Friedrich Berry, AuD '10, who was killed in an automobile accident just weeks after passing her comprehensive exam. Dr. Berry's family came from Texas for the commencement to honor her memory and accomplishment.
The University presented two honorary degrees this year. After an introduction by Osborne College of Audiology dean, Dr. Victor Bray, an honorary degree of Doctor of Science was awarded to Fred H. Bess, PhD, professor and director of the National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication at Vanderbilt University's Bill Wilkerson Center for Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences. Dr. Bess told the graduates he hoped that they always have a passion for their profession, along with a sense of purpose and a pursuit of balance in their lives.
This was the final graduating class of distance graduates. After all distance graduates present had been hooded and received their diplomas, the very last degree of the distance program was presented. A ceremonial degree of Doctor of Audiology was presented posthumously to George S. Osborne, DDS, PhD, who was described by Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano in his introductory remarks as, "our founding dean, colleague and continued inspiration." Mrs. Joan Osborne accepted the award on behalf of her late husband and donated the diploma to the Osborne College of Audiology.
Class representative Felicia Stallings addressed her fellow graduates and spoke of the shared journey in getting to commencement. Reem J. Toma received the Dean's Award for the highest score on the AuD comprehensive exam and Sherman G. Lord received the AFA Professional Leadership Award for advancing the profession of Audiology.
Optometry, Center for International Studies, College of Education and Rehabilitation
Pictured at left are (left to right): Dr. Kathleen Huebner, associate dean, College of Education and Rehabilitation; Dr. Anthony Di Stefano; Mr. Campbell; Dr. Lewis and Dr. Audrey Smith, dean, College of Education and Rehabilitataton.
On Sunday, May 23 at Philadelphia's Kimmel Center, 154 Optometry, 27 International program, and 11 College of Education and Rehabilitation graduates received degrees, along with 30 departing residents of The Eye Institute, who received certificates after completing a year's residency in one of several specialty areas. (International program graduates totaled 96 students; however, only 27 were able to travel to the U.S. for the ceremony).
The University presented two honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degrees at this commencement. The first was awarded to Dr. John Amos, past dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry; the second to Mr. Larry Campbell, president of the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairments (IECVI).
Introduced by his colleague and friend Dr. Linda Casser, dean of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, Dr. Amos spoke of the many changes in the scope of practice over the past forty years, citing the involvement of thousands of optometrists as the reason.
Associate dean and professor, Dr. Kathleen M. Huebner, introduced her longtime colleague and friend Mr. Campbell, who told of his first experience with a person with visual impairments as an inexperienced Peace Corps worker in Jamaica and how that experience changed the direction of his life. After the Peace Corps, Mr. Brown pursued a master's degree in order to work with people with visual impairments.
Class president Timothy Brown addressed his classmates, expressing the graduates' gratitude to their families, friends and faculty for the support they had received from them. Amy M. Bartal and Elaine N. Miller tied for the Alumni Association Award, presented to the graduate with the highest academic average during four years of professional study.
At both ceremonies, Dr. Charles M. Wormington gave the convocation and benediction, and the graduates were welcomed by Dr. Thomas L. Lewis, University president. At the conclusion of both events, Dr. Di Stefano led the graduates, faculty and all health care professionals in attendance in a reading of the Oath to Professionalism, which is first read by new Salus students at their white coat ceremonies during orientation. |

PA Olympics
by Jennifer Gray '11PA
This spring the Salus PA Class of 2011 competed in the annual Philadelphia area Physician Assistant (PA) Olympics. Four area PA programs, De Sales University, Drexel University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Philadelphia University joined Salus students to raise money for a local charity and compete in various competitions.
This year the competitors were able to raise a total of $2,000, which was donated to The Red Shield Family Shelter of the Salvation Army in Philadelphia. After a long day of competing, the Salus University PA Class of 2011 finished a strong second, losing by a mere one point to Philadelphia University.
Although the class placed second overall, Team Salus finished in first place in more events than any other team, winning the Egg Speculum Race, the Ultimate Relay and Dodge Ball. Salus University is a two time winner of the trophy (2008, 2009).
Overall the day was a great success with a strong finish from all the competitors and most importantly, money was raised for a great cause. |
