PA PHANS!
PA Phillies April 2010
Though the evening proved rainy, wet and cold, Salus Physician Assistant students and their guests, plus University faculty and staff had a great time at the Phillies game on April 16.     PA students sold 127 tickets as part of their class fundraising project and despite the wind and rain, Salus "phans" watched a great game, as Phillies pitcher Roy Halliday threw his first game at home and the Phillies won.

TEI Groundbreaking
 TEI Groundbreaking
At the groundbreaking are (left to right): Board member Dr. Elois Rogers-Phillips; Board Chair Ms. Jo Surpin; Board members Mr. Ian McWherter '12OD, Ms. Mindy Posoff and Mr. Christopher Dezzi; Dr. Susan Olewszewski; Dr. Thomas L. Lewis and Mr. Derrick Green, special counsel to Philadephia Councilwoman Marian Tasco. (Also present but not pictured, past Board member, Dr. A.A. Phillips'69).
The Eye Institute kicked off an 18 month, $10 million renovation on April 29. The groundbreaking ceremony was the result of much hard work and planning to renovate, expand and redesign TEI to meet the demands of today's technologies and patients.
Dr. Thomas L. Lewis, president of Salus University, spoke about the combined journey of the Board, administration, faculty, staff, the designers, GS Architects of Media, PA, and the builders, James J. Clearkin, Inc. of Cheltenham, PA, to arrive at the point of the groundbreaking. Along the way, challenges in the form of design revisions dictated by changes in state funding and site conditions had to be met. Final plans call for a 15,000-square-foot expansion that will allow all patient care services to occur on one level.
Dr. Susan C. Oleszewski, TEI executive director and vice-president for Patient Care Services, noted that, while there will be challenges to be faced by TEI faculty, staff and students as the project progresses, she was confident that the flexibility and patience they had exhibited during the planning process would continue throughout the project. Dr. Oleszewski also acknowledged faculty members in the audience who, over the years, have helped establish and now maintain The Eye Institute's worldwide reputation as a teaching facility.
In her remarks, Board Chair Jo Surpin noted that "The 'New' Eye Institute will not only ensure that our students continue to receive every advantage in their clinical education, it also reaffirms the Board of Trustees' ongoing commitment to make PCO the premier program for Optometry."
Representing the faculty, Dr. Jean Marie Pagani described her peers as "feeling excited" because "finally the new TEI building will reflect both outside and inside the quality of care we deliver to our patients and the quality of education we give to our students."
Shana Barrett, president of the Class of 2013, spoke on behalf of her fellow students and told the audience, ". . . I have had only a small taste of the services The Eye institute has to offer, but my experiences here so far have been nothing less than stellar. Our doctors are not only amazing clinicians, but also show us their passion for education each and every day."
After the ceremony a slide show of old TEI and faculty photos was shown in the amphitheater and light refreshments were served.

Reunion 2010!

Dr. and Mrs. Weaver with Dr. LewisSaturday, May 1 was unseasonably warm, but warmer still were the greetings exchanged by the alumni who came to Elkins Park for the Alumni Reunion.
Beginning in the morning with campus tours and lunch in the Cafe, the day's festivities continued with a "Reminisce with PCO Faculty" reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and concluded with the evening celebration events, including awarding the 2010 PCO Alumnus of the Year honor, the "I" Care Raffle drawing, a buffet dinner, tastings of wines produced by the vineyards of alums Dr. Robert L. Owens II '80, and Dr. Paul J. Lobby '79, casino games and dancing to a live band.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Class of 1985 boasted 32 members plus their guests, the largest group at the reunion. Making the evening more memorable was a repeat of classmate Dr. Clark Seyboth's "famous" Mick Jagger impressions from their student days.
Alumni Association president, Dr. John Ochsenreither '88 and president-elect Dr. Rob Spivack '85, presented the Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year Award to Dr. Jeffrey Weaver '85. Dr. Weaver, who in addition to teaching at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and being Colonel Weaver, the U.S. Army Reserve's Chief of Optometry, is the Executive Director for the American Board of Optometry.
On Sunday morning, an alumni breakfast was held, giving alumni one last opportunity to get together before beginning their journey home or attending the Grand Rounds CE Program. This three hour COPE approved Continuing Education program featured PCO dean Dr. Linda Casser and five TEI residents who presented some unique and curious cases for discussion with alumni.
