The University community warmly congratulates:
Marion Weber, Elkins Park, on the birth of her new grandson, Logan James Ziring.
 
Mitchell Scheiman, O.D., Chief, Pediatric Services TEI, who was invited to visit the New England College of Optometry in March as their 2010 Behavorial Scholar-in-Residence. Dr. Scheiman presented to first, second and third year classes and gave a CE lecture.

SOSH PREPS FOR TRIP,  NEEDS DONATIONS!
SOSH students are hard at work, raising money for their July 1 - 7 humanitarian mission to El Salvador. While the students gladly accept and need monetary donations, they also are asking for donations of:
     - Re-wetting drops
     - Non-prescription/ UV  protected sunglasses
    - Flourescein strips
 
April 18: SOSH officers will be selling the Pelino Book in the Cafe lobby 12N - 1pm.
 
May 1: SOSH will have an info table at the Alumni Reunion to showcase their mission and trips, collect equipment donations and offer Pelino books for sale.
 
May 1 and 2: SOSH members will hold a carwash on campus. Attendees at the reunion and the CE can have their vehicles washed and support a great cause.

NOSA Seminar a Success

Last month students from the PCO chapter of the National Optometric Students Association (NOSA) held a seminar/dinner hosted by Wal-Mart on "Effective Networking." 

    The dinner and seminar, which were open to all optometry students, were well attended. The event took place in the University Caf� on the Elkins Park campus from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Honorary Degree Recipients Announced            
The University has announced the names of the honorary degree recipients at this year's commencement ceremonies. On May 21, Fred Bess, PhD, professor and director of the National Center for Childhood Deafness and Family Communication at Vanderbilt University, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science at the audiology commencement.
      At the PCO, College of Education and Rehabilitation and International commencement on May 23, John Amos, MS, OD, former dean of the School of Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science, and Mr. Larry Campbell, president of the International Council for the Education of People with Visual Impairments (ICEVI) will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.                                      
      On September 25, Rear Admiral (ret.) Kenneth Moritsugu, MD, MPH, chairman of the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute and former Acting Surgeon General, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at the PA commencement.

MPH Degree Program Site Visit
A three member team from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) visited Elkins Park on April 12 and 13 to evaluate the University's readiness to offer a new degree program in the fall.
      In addition to certificate programs that will begin this fall, a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program would become the first degree approved since the establishment of the University. 
      While on campus the site visit team toured the University library and the Academic Technology and Resources Center, in addition to meeting with faculty. Since the public health programs will be distance education programs, the site team was given demonstrations of the technology and the platforms to be used in delivering the programs to students.
    The proposal team, Dr. Anthony F. Di Stefano, Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. James Caldwell, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. William Monaco, Adjunct, met with the PDE site team, who also met with Dr. Thomas L. Lewis, University President. Faculty and staff involved in the process of preparing for the visit included Dr. Andrew Buzzelli, James Cawley, Betty Cochran, Lynne Corboy, Dr. Stanley Hatch, Don Kates, Keith Lammers, Dr. Derek Mladenovich, Melissa Padilla, Glenn Roedel, Peggy Shelly and Dr. Satya Verma.The University hopes to receive notification of the site team's decision sometime in late June. The University website www.salus.edu/publichealth will soon contain information and details about the certificate programs.

On  March 12 at the Pennsylvania Ear Institute, staff and students wore orange in honor of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Day, and in support of Megan Myers '12, whose aunt suffers from the disease. PEI is the clinical facility of the University's Osborne College of Audiology and is located on the Elkins Park campus in the North Tower, the building next door to the University's academic buildings.                                                                              Shown above with a cake decorated in the color of the day are (left to right): Heidi Dymowski '12, Dr. Tricia Dabrowski, Megan Myers '12 , Dr. Zorina Mikhelon, Amber Rosen '12, Dr. Kelli         Shivers-Beswick, Latoya Shuler '12, and Theresa Mamah '12.

SOSH 5K Fun Run/Walk

SOSH is holding its annual 5K run/walk and post race All You Can Eat BBQ on Saturday, April 24. The race/walk raises money for the SOSH July 1-7 humanitarian trip to bring essential eye care to areas having little or no access to health care in El Salvador.

     Run/Walk registration will be available on race day. You can also sign up on campus. SOSH will have a table set up for registration outside of the Caf� on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, April 21 - 23, from 12N to 1:00 p.m.

      There are T-shirts for runners and walkers and they are available to those who would like to purchase one but cannot join the Run/Walk. The photo above is part of the shirt, which was designed by Audiology student Andy Lau '12.

        Fees include: a Run/Walk package (t-shirt; all you can eat BBQ) for $20; All You Can Eat BBQ with t-shirt for $15; T-shirt only for $12 and All You Can Eat BBQ only for $10.

        SOSH officers invite everyone to "come out and enjoy pre- exam time and get a chance to meet your other classmates in the AUD, OD and PA programs,"  and thank everyone for their support.

        Prizes will be awarded to the top men's and women's times and to the runner with the "Best Race Apparel." So put the "fun" into the Fun Run - and be sure to wear your funniest running outfit!    

 
Bookstore Buyback             

Matthews Bookstore has instituted a textbook buyback program. According to manager Joe Noce, "Any current textbook sold to students can be bought back as long as it has a value in our online guide, which is updated continually."  

    While it is difficult to estimate what percentage of original value students might expect to receive, Mr. Noce says the percentage might be as much as 50% and is based on the number of copies in the marketplace, and whether the books are adopted for coursework. He adds, "Students and staff are welcome to bring a stack of textbooks in, and we'll be happy to look up the buyback prices. We will pay cash on the spot for anything we purchase."

     What determines "current" status is also affected by a number of other factors. Old editions generally have no value at all, nor do titles that have revisions pending, notes Mr. Noce.    "Health science titles tend to have a shorter shelf-life for editions since there are new medicines and treatment protocols almost daily," he explains. "There are some specialty topics, especially in the fields of Optometry and Audiology, that have remained constant for years, and the same holds true for basic sciences such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, etc., and texts on these subjects tend to stick around for a bit longer."

      The program is a positive for several reasons, Mr. Noce notes. "Having a supply of used books on hand for sale in the store will ease some of the financial burden on our students, and could even encourage some to supplement their reference library with titles they may not have been able to previously afford."

   The buyback is available year-round, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.        
SOSH Culture Fest

On Thursday, March 25, 2010, SOSH held their Second Annual Culture Fest.  The Salus University Cafe was filled with aromas of appetizers, main courses, and desserts from different regions of the world.  Many Salus students, faculty, and staff took the night off from cooking and were able to enjoy a $5.00 international dinner. 

      Food and drink items were donated by SOSH members, Williamson's Reflections Cafe, and many restaurants in the surrounding community. Some of the food items included couscous, shepherd's pie, Chineseeggrolls, sushi, chicken marsala, homemade apple pie, and Irish whiskey cake.

      The Culture Fest is just one of the many fundraisers created by SOSH to raise funds for our mission of providing eye care to the people of emergent nations.  Thanks to everyone for your continued support of SOSH!
