A Note from Jay

This Week's Market Update:

Logo_plain  Logo_plain   Logo_plain

Moore Farms just dropped off these wonderful summer squashes and blossoms that we'll use in our summer squash risotto.

Logo_plainFarmer Jeff brought by this amazing heirloom okra.
It's beautiful and full of flavor. I can guarantee no
one else in town has it. Heirloom
plants are much
less productive than hybrids, which is one of the
reasons things are hybridized in the first place. And
he only sells it to us. Speaking of heirlooms, check
out these tomatoes he brought as well. Can't wait to see where these end up on the menu. Love the abundance of produce during the summer in the ATL. It's a chef's best inspiration.

And how about fresh chick peas (aka garbanzo beans)?
  These
are a rare and delicious addition to our summer
legumes selection. Legumes are veggies that grow in
pods like peas, fava beans, green beans and some things
you may not expect like peanuts and tamarind.

Tybee Island white shrimp are still amazing. They smell like the ocean!

4th & Swift Garden Update:
Japanese eggplants are coming in fast and we should have bright red cayenne pepper and fresno chilies any day now.

And some good news about our organic garden here at 4th & Swift: I am consulting with some local farmers about expanding our sustainable farm here
and by next spring we will have a 300-square foot organic micro farm. OK, garden. Micro farm just sounds cooler

Cool Events:
This Saturday I am doing a cooking demo at Serenbe Farms, and Sunday we are doing "Give Me Five" at East Lake Golf Club. The event features five chefs and five sommeliers and benefits Share Our Strength and their campaign to end Childhood Hunger. Tickets are still available to both events.

Attack of the Killer Tomato Fest is August 9. If you love tomatoes there will be a dozen chefs competing with their best tomato dishes, so I wouldn't miss it. It will be held at Westside Provisions District | JCT Kitchen on Howell Mill Road. Keep reading for details about these events and other cool happenings at 4th & Swift this summer.

Love your mama ~ Eat real food!
