Greetings!

During this Christmas season, I thought it would be a perfect time to share a wonderful story with you about the gift of giving.  A few weeks ago when I was teaching the Art of Networking class at Rice's Glasscock School of Continuing Studies one of our guest speakers, Bede Ramcharan, spoke to the class about the importance of networking all the time.  He shared with the class a story that I believe imparts those very important elements about networking that are often forgotten.

Bede Ramcharan started Indatatech (Instant Data Technologies) which provides services and solutions for inventory management as well as process design and improvement of fixed assets.  He retired from the military and used his skills and experience to venture out on his own.

Just after opening Indatatech, nine years ago in San Antonio, Texas Mr. Ramcharan had to be in Austin, Texas for a meeting.  While walking from his parking spot to the building where the meeting was taking place, he noticed a man trying to unload some crates.  Bede noticed the gentleman could really use a hand as he was having a challenging time unloading these items onto the sidewalk.  When Bede walked over to help this stranger in need, the man was most grateful for helping him unload these crates safely.  .

After he thanked Mr. Ramcharan for his help, the gentleman asked Bede what his name was and what type of work he did.  Always one to be prepared, Bede felt comfortable delivering his 30-second commercial regarding his business.  The gentleman handed Mr. Ramcharan his card, wrote a contact name and telephone number on the back of the card, and told him to call the small business liaison for this very large corporation for whom he worked.

Noting an immediate opportunity for new business, Mr. Ramcharan called the small business liaison immediately.  The person on the other end of the call asked Bede if he could come to Houston to present his services.  Mr. Ramcharan drove up there that very day.

The long and short of the story is that Mr. Ramcharan was awarded a generous contract with this Fortune 1000 company (the name has been omitted for confidentiality purposes), and he still has a contract with this company 9 years later!

The wonderful point about this story is that it was just a small gesture of kindness that Mr. Ramcharan extended to this man who was struggling to unload some crates that resulted in Indatatech's first large corporate contract.  Mr. Ramcharan had NO idea who this man worked for or what he was doing with these crates except that he could see this person needed some help.  By giving some assistance to this individual with no strings attached,  Bede received a wonderful gift in return.   That IS what networking is all about.  In selfless giving to and helping others, we receive amazing gifts.

I want to thank each and every one of you for subscribing to my newsletter and for your ongoing support.  Wishing you and your families a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

See you next year,
Laura
