Gosh, it seems everything today that we read in the newspapers, online or even listen to on the radio is all about doom, gloom and negativity involving the financial crisis we all face. The press constantly illuminates that for us, but there IS some real BS going on that I want to share with you in case you didn't hear about it already.
You don't think I would actually be writing about the BS that may have first come to mind when you saw those 2 letters, do you? Well, it's possible, but the BS to which I am referring stands for Believing and Supporting one another in the midst of what is referred to in corporate speak as FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt).
While watching a segement on ABC's Good Morning America yesterday morning, there was a short piece done about a story out of Norway, Maine, and it is truly inspiring. Apparently in a school district there, the superintendent found out that he was going to have to cut $500,000 from his budget halfway through the school year. Fortunately, before he could begin issuing work dismissals, hundreds of employees (363 to be exact) rallied together to prevent several school employees from losing their jobs. Those employees who pitched in to help by contributing cash to address the budget shortfall included all position levels from the superintendent to the janitors and teacher's aides. Together they raised $70,000 within a 3-week period. Although the donations raised are not enough to cover the large budget gap, according to the superintendent, it is enough to keep seven special education technicians, reading teachers and custodial staff on the payroll for the rest of the school term.
Members of this school district in Maine banded together to help their fellow citizens and neighbors because they Believed in and Supported their community. So in the midst of all of the FUD, some amazing BS was demonstrated by these school district employees. The district superintendent, Mark Eastman, said it best: "It feels great. It's wonderful. I mean, it's like the old Chinese proverb, 'You can either curse the darkness, or you can light a candle'. People took it upon themselves to help one another - that puts a lump in my throat." It certainly puts one in mine also.
At a critical time in our history when we have such an opportunity to believe and support one another, think about what you can do to extend some BS to someone, and I guarantee you will feel good inside!
Until next time,
Laura
