UPDATE from CASE MANAGEMENT

Note to parents:

Because of the return to school or perhaps in many cases your child is returning to a new school, we strongly encourage parents to actively participate in their child's education and activities. All parents should keep a log of information about their child's friends. For example, phone numbers, where they live, favorite hangout locations, and most importantly their parents information.

In case your child or teen goes missing, it is imperative to know this information off hand to be able to get adequate information and or possibly locate the child more effectively. Maintaining a strong connection with your child, their friends and families helps build a stronger community, therefore, creating a safer environment for all.

National Victim Assistance Academy

In our best efforts to better serve the community, Nevada Child Seekers Case Manager, Sonia Lucero, attended the National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA), which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice's Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) in Madison, Winconsin, (Track 1, Foundation-Level Training) August 8-12. The academy provided a broad understanding of the victim services field, which provided skills, knowledge and resources necessary to better assist parents and children. The training featured lectures and engaging interactive exercises that addressed topics such as: Impact of crime on victims, communicating with victims and survivors, providing direct services, collaborating for rights and services, cultural and spiritual competence and ethics.

For more information about OVC, contact the OVC resource center at (800)627-6872 or visit the website at www.ovc.gov. For information about other Office of Justice programs, please visit www.usdoj.gov

If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact Sonia at Nevada Child Seekers at 458-7009 or Sonia@Nevadachildseekers.org

FALL radKIDs CLASSES

radkids

So, a parent might ask, "How can I prepare my child to protect themselves IF they are ever placed in these dangerous situations and I am not there to help?"

Nevada Child Seekers offers a program to prevent children from becoming one of these statistics just mentioned. radKIDs is a personal empowerment program that focuses on providing children with options, not fear when dealing with dangerous situations. The class teaches children the ABC'S of prevention: Abduction Prevention, Bullying Prevention, Child Abuse Prevention, and Sexual Abuse Prevention. Three basic principles are emphasized during this course: 1) Nobody has the right to hurt you because you are special; 2) You don't have the right to hurt anyone else (including yourself) unless someone is trying to physically hurt you, then you have the right to stop them; 3) It's not your fault, and because it's not your fault, you can tell.

These classes will be held 2 hours a day everyday for the weeks noted below. 5-8 year old children will attend the class from 9am-11am and 9-12 year olds will attend 1pm-3pm everyday. You MUST register your child in person at the facility. These classes are offered FREE OF CHARGE.

All children who graduate from the class will receive a t-shirt, wrist band and graduation certificate with their picture on it. They will also receive a certificate after graduation allowing them to attend any radKIDS class in the future, up to age 13, for free. Parents will receive a family manual so they can follow their children's progress at home or during class. Parents are encouraged to sit in on the classes whenever possible; kids love it and so do the instructors.

INTERNET SAFETY CORNER

CYBERBULLYING AT A GLANCE...
  Netsmartz Workshop JPEG

·         1-4 children will experience cyber bullying in their lifetime

·          90% of people are being cyber bullied by someone they know

·          Girls are more likely to cyber bully

·         25% of teens check their friends phones and use it as a form of control in relationships

·         80% of teens surveyed want anti-bullying campaigns on campus

Nevada Child Seekers offers an Internet Safety course to prepare children, teens and parents on how to be as safe as possible on the Internet. In partnership with the Las Vegas Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, this training teaches students and their parents safe Internet usage, the dangers of the internet and how to report inappropriate contact, solicitations and/or victimization through the CyberTipline at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Nevada Child Seekers has worked diligently to expand the program and cover newer topics on sexting and cyberbullying along with distributing resources for help and worksheets for the children to use and refer back to after the class.

In the last three years, we have been delivering the program, there has been an increase in the number of incidents reported to proper authorities involving crimes against children on the Internet. In 2008, there were 169 reports submitted to the Cybertipline™ and in 2009, there were 209 all involving children from Nevada. During presentations, we have been made aware of sexual solicitation of minors and other attempted crimes against children involving predators on the Internet. Parents relayed that they were happy to now know how to report it so these crimes can be investigated to minimize the likelihood the perpetrators would victimize another child.

NCS Bids Farewell to

Theresa Fearweather - Allison

It is with a great sense of thanks for her years of service to Nevada Child Seekers and one of sadness to bid our farewells to Theresa Fairweather-Allison, Operations Manager.

She came to NCS in June of 2009 and from the beginning her infectious smile and her work ethic were just some of her great qualities.  In 2010, she instituted Operation Drug Free in conjunction with the DEA. NCS and the DEA present this much sought program to middle and high schools in Clark County.  She was instrumental in starting the "Messages for the Missing," where parents of missing children make a short video where they speak directly to their child.  It is then aired on to You Tube, Facebook and on the NCS website and has reunited several families.

Theresa's educational background in Marketing, passion and dedication helped pull together the three big charity events that NCS hosts each year; The 5K Race for Kids, the Golf Tournament and the Le Gala de Cuisine Charity Dinner.  Theresa worked tirelessly to make all of the events a success.  We thank and wish her the best of luck in her new position with the DEA and in her new life as Mrs. Allison.
