SEO or Search Engine Optimization refers to work done to a web site to make it easier for search engines to understand what each page is about. These optimization actions can be passive or active.
Passive SEO means following the best recognized practices. The benefit is that your site starts life in a naturally search-engine friendly way. Remember that natural result lists are clicked MORE OFTEN than pay-per click listings.
Active SEO includes the creation of meta and title tags, a sitemap and various other actions that vary depending on each website and their goals. A key part of optimization is the content itself. Site copy should be well written and relevant to the expected search terms.
A final component of ranking is paid placement. SEO has become a business within itself. Some companies claim to "guarantee" high ranking for your site in Google's search results. While legitimate consulting firms can improve your site's flow and content, many others employ deceptive tactics in an attempt to fool search engines. Be careful; if your domain is affiliated with one of these deceptive services, it could be banned from the Google index.
