KI is excited to announce that Rabbi Yitzchok Adlerstein will be our scholar in residence for the first Shabbos of August (August 1-2). (Rabbi Adlerstein's wife - Reena Metchik - is a native of Harrisburg.)
Rabbi Yitzchok Adlerstein holds the Sydney M. Irmas Adjunct Chair in Jewish Law and Ethics at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, CA. In that capacity, he teaches Introduction to Jewish Law and Contemporary Issues in Jewish Law and arranges yearly events on Jewish and religious law.
Rabbi Adlerstein is the Director of Interfaith affairs at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and a founder and co-principal of the Jewish Mediation Service. He serves on the faculty at the Yeshiva of Los Angeles Girls High School, a member of the Beth Din Committee of the Rabbinical Council of California, and a press liaison for the Orthodox rabbinate of Southern California.
Rabbi Adlerstein won the 2000 Rabbinical Leadership Award from the Rabbinical Council of California. He is a contributing editor to the Orthodox Union's quarterly Jewish Action, as well as its regular computer columnist. Dozens of his essays have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The National Law Journal, First Things, Tradition, Shma, the Los Angeles Daily Law Journal, and a host of Jewish (Torah U-Madah, Jewish Observer, Hamodia, Midstream) and general printed and electronic media. He is an often interviewed and quoted as a spokesperson for Torah issues in Southern California , and has appeared on ABC's 20/20, CBS National News, radio stations across the country, and in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times.
He is the co-founder of Crosscurrents -- a blog of Torah and current affairs. His Be'er Hagolah:The Classic Defense of Rabbinic Judaism by Maharal of Prague, was published by Artscroll/Mesorah Publications, and he is currently assisting in the editing of Artscroll's new edition of Ramban's commentary to the Torah.
Over the course of the weekend, we look forward to learning with Rabbi Adlerstein on a number of occasions.
Here is the tentative schedule of his talks:
1) Friday night communal meal at KI: (7:40 PM) Religion on the Line -- Tales of a Media Road Warrior: Upbeat and often funny revisiting of some of the strangest moments that Rabbi Adlerstein has had on the radio and with the press while promoting Torah Judaism.
2) D'var Torah from the pulpit during Shabbos morning services
3) Post-kiddush / pre-lunch lecture for the entire community after services at KI: New Friends and Foes: How did it come to pass that the most reliable supporters of Israel come from the Christian right? Can Orthodox Jews play a special role in reaching out to Christians in support of Israel?
4) Afternoon class for women of the entire community at a KI family's home (5:15-6:00 PM, location to be announced) by Mrs. Reena Adlerstein: View From a Jewish Metropolis -- Why Growing Up Elsewhere is Better!
5) Rabbi Adlerstein's afternoon class for the entire community at a KI family's home (6:10-7:10 PM, location to be announced): From Moshe to Musa: Judaism and Halacha were heavy influences on the development of Islam. Comparing and contrasting the two religions will leave us with a greater appreciation for Halacha.
6) A lecture for the entire community during Shalosh Seudos at KI: (7:55 PM) Why the World Still Needs the Jews: What have Jews and Judaism contributed to general culture? Are they still needed? Thoughts from both non-Jews and Jewish tradition.
