Small Business in the News:

Zack Larson, Biologist

Local biologist and avid fisherman Zack Larson navigates the windy highway in his blue truck and talks about the spike in attention Del Norte County is getting from trout anglers.

"One interesting thing about the Smith is that it's real accessible in some parts," says Larson as he drives toward the first fishing hole he'll visit this day.

The river may soon be getting even more attention. A survey is under way to see whether the Smith is a suitable candidate for the California Department of Fish and Game's Heritage and Wild Trout Program.

The department's California Heritage Trout Challenge gives a certificate to anglers who catch six different native trout from their historic drainages.

Another criteria for a watershed to be accepted into the program is that it be "aesthetically pleasing and environmentally productive" - a criteria that the Smith River is sure to meet, Larson says.

The Heritage and Wild Trout Program designation process is in its second phase for the Smith River. A survey crew is ensuring it meets the trout population and angler experience criteria.

Survey boxes have also been posted at various fishing areas along the river. The cards ask how many fish were caught and the overall experience of the fishing trip.
