Hello,

We are so pleased to announce that the County of Humboldt and the City of Crescent City were awarded grants by the California Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Enterprise Fund.

What this means for the North Coast SBDC, as the sub-contractor to the grants, is that we will be able to continue providing our specialized, intensive flight programs and technical assistance for microenterprises!

We also have incorporated some new aspects into the programs.  As each program is started, we will notify the public of these opportunities through our social media and press releases.

In addition to these grants being awarded, the City of Eureka was awarded with business assistance loan funds and the County of Del Norte was awarded micro-loan funds, both from the California CDBG as well.

We are so proud to be worthy of receiving such funds that will undoubtedly support North Coast entrepreneurs in starting and growing their businesses!

Congratulations to all involved and to those who will benefit from these programs!

Microenterprise Prosperity Scholarship Flight

Alynn ZdawczynskiGuest Writer: Alynn Zdawczynski

The Individual Development Account (IDA) program is a complex web of partnerships. I realized this after working the past few months to help get the Del Norte Prosperity Scholarship Flight Program up and running - the first ever IDA program offered in Del Norte County!

Here at the Arcata Economic Development Corporation we juggle funding from Wells Fargo and AFI to offer the IDA scholarships and we organize the personal money management classes with Consumer Credit Counseling Services of the NorthCoast. Another important aspect is forming an agreement with a local bank, in this flight with Chetco Federal Credit Union to house the savings accounts.

The North Coast SBDC contributes the summation of all their individual partnerships with workshop speakers, counselors, and funders, which is beyond my knowledge but I'm certain is vast.

Together the AEDC and SBDC recruit and interview participants, distribute and collect applications and forms and schedule the year and half long flight program.

The effort required to get it off the ground has been similar to a marathon. Yet the rewards come as the participants are engaged and inspired by the opportunity.

No doubt they will be working hard to complete the required elements including earning and depositing monthly savings and completing in depth business plan with their business advisor.

I personally am grateful to interact with the talented and dedicated participants and to collaborate with so many community supporters. I look forward to watching the small businesses and entrepreneurs participating in this program flourish, as a result of the web of partners that make it possible. Thanks to everyone involved!
