Businesses in Humboldt will have yet another opportunity to receive expert training on direct to consumer marketing.

This month Janet Wentworth returns to Humboldt County to deliver a workshop on how Humboldt County businesses can develop strategies that increase sales from outside of Humboldt County.

The workshop this month is a continuation of the 'Building the Humboldt Online Universe' events. Andrew Davis was the presenter at the series of events in April that were aimed at big picture ideas on how to more successfully market Humboldt.  He summarized his ideas in a blog post, which can be seen on his website.

AEDC brings Lemonade Day to the North Coast

Lemonade Day is a hands-on way to teach kids about business and to create the next generation workforce. The purpose is to empower them to think big! As youth start their own business -- a lemonade stand -- Lemonade Day gives them tools to be successful in life. Be part of this national initiative as it strives to have 1 million young entrepreneurs across the United States open a lemonade stand for one day by 2013.

North Coast Lemonade Day will be held on June 4 and is open to kids of all ages. They will be given authentic business licenses and the freedom to run their business however they want.  This means that the stands will be located according to the business-owner's plans and may or may not involve collaboration with other stands, existing businesses, or public events.

A loan program paid for by the Headwaters Fund, and administered by the Arcata Economic Development Corporation, is available to children who would like assistance in building their business.  Once the loan, if used, is paid back, any profits are for the business owners to keep and use for whatever they like.

Signing up officially with Lemonade Day provides children with a kit of recipes, ideas and a tote bag.  The main purpose is to quantify the success of the project so that it, and related projects, has support to continue in the future.

If you know any children that would like to participate, they can sign up at  www.northcoast.lemonadeday.org or in person at one of our many in-person events.  They may also contact Nick Canton at canton@northcoastsbdc.org.

They even have their own page on Facebook with more information!

Activities highlighting and celebrating young entrepreneurship will be held by schools and youth organizations throughout the year. To find out how your school, church, club, organization, business, neighborhood play group or how your kids can participate, call Susan at AEDC with any questions, at 822-4616 ext. 12.

Whatever your level of participation will be, show your support for these budding entrepreneurs by keeping an eye out for lemonade stands on June 4th.

North Coast Lemonade Day, the Humboldt/Del Norte County project, is part of the Decade of Difference 20/20 Initiative. Through partnerships with school, business and economic development leaders, Lemonade Day is one project to highlight the importance of small business to our economy -- and our children as the future of that economy.

Small Business Success: Certified Plumbing

In 2008, we wanted to move home to Del Norte and open a plumbing business. While living in Reno, we spoke to Barbara Burke and she set our minds at ease, knowing that we would have a valuable resource available to us. So we took a gamble by leaving Reno and moving to Del Norte. This phone call started our relationship with the North Coast Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The staff at SBDC - Barbara, Janna and Amber, through their knowledge, patience, workshops and endlessly answering our questions; Certified Plumbing Co opened for business in November 2008. We set ourselves aside by our plumbing certifications, knowledge and outstanding customer service. Even though Certified Plumbing Co. is open and operating profitably, Barbara and her staff are always available for our questions. If we had not found the SBDC office, our business may not have even opened. Thank you SBDC for all you do for us and other small business owners.

-Chris and Cyndi Vaughan - Certified Plumbing Co.

Economic Fuel awards will be presented tonight, Friday April 29 at the Wharfinger building in Eureka at 6:30 pm and also streaming from  www.economicfuel.org

Every year these courageous entrepreneurs put their business plans out to be judged and participate in an amazing process of refinement.  If you happen to know someone who participated, be sure to congratulate them on their efforts!
