Recently, our Board President Gregg Foster briefed the Eureka Old Town Rotary group on the role of the Redwood Region Economic Development Commission and the North Coast Small Business Development Center in the community. He said the the audience was struck by the economic impact numbers generated by clients of the SBDC in 2009.
Behind the statistics was the fact that real and positive stuff is happening despite a still-negative economic psychology.
And the numbers are pretty good: - 724 clients received one-on-one counseling
- 284 hours of workshop or classroom training were offered
- 139 new jobs were created by businesses that are North Coast SBDC clients
- 424 jobs were retained by businesses that are North Coast SBDC clients
- 41 new businesses were opened by North Coast SBDC clients
- $13,137,291 in increased sales were reported by clients of the North Coast SBDC
- 39 new loans were received by businesses that are North Coast SBDC clients
- $13,730,184 in total capital infusion (loans and equity) was reported by the clients of the North Coast SBDC
Now entering December, we begin our push to collect this year's economic impact statistics. I've been saying that it has never been more important. In the new budget, the State of California put a crowbar into a skinny wallet to come up with 50% in matching funds for the state's SBDC program. To earn the privilege of keeping that money in the future, we have to show results. As a taxpayer, I wouldn't have it any other way. As the leader of this organization, we need to capture every bit of impact that our clients have achieved.
So whether you're making calls this year, or perhaps receiving such a call, we appreciate your help. I look forward to presenting 2010's numbers soon.
All the best,
Michael Kraft Executive Director

Michael Kraft is a 2010 recipient of the Northern California Small Business Development Network State Star award.
The State Star program is sponsored by the Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) that recognizes outstanding Small Business Development Center (SBDC) staff from each state program. Michael was recognized at a special reception at the annual ASBDC conference banquet, and presented his award by Antonio Doss of the US Small Business Administration.
Michael was chosen for this award because he; shows unflagging commitment to the success of small businesses of Humboldt and Del Norte Counties, effectively manages his resources to deliver a high level of business technical assistance and economic impact that exceeds centers in the state's most populous areas, and consistently shares resources and supports regional goals to build business success in the entire region.
