The Olympics of Breastfeeding ...

By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director, MilkWorks

olympian I LOVE watching the Olympics.  I have a blend of sympathy and admiration for the athletes.  Their fierceness for perfection strikes me as unrealistic.  Yet their determination inspires me. Because I personally value teamwork more than winning, when they help each other to succeed, it makes me smile.

So what do the Olympics have to do with breastfeeding?

The Centers for Disease Control releases statistics on breastfeeding every couple of years.  When they release the new data, it is like reading the sports page.  How did Nebraska do?  Are our stats better this year? Did we beat Iowa?

Good Bugs and Bad Bugs and Cold Season

Antibiotic resistant bacteria has been in the news  this year as the Food and Drug administration has tried to limit the use of antibiotics in livestock. Moms Rising is cows now trying to get Trader Joe's to agree to sell only meat raised without antibiotics. The main concern is that antibiotic resistant bacteria are costing an estimated $20 billion a year in excess health care costs and even more in societal costs. Anyone who develops a resistant bacterial infection is at great risk for serious health consequences.

Antibiotic resistance means we all need to think about how we can maintain good health and avoid taking antibiotics unless necessary. Especially as we enter into the cold and flu season. Breastfeeding your baby is a great way for you to help your baby build a strong immune system. A mother passes important bacteria fighting properties through her milk. These protective factors are not available in any human milk substitute.

baby Another means of supporting a baby's health is through the use of probiotics, a supplement containing a significant number of viable microorganisms that alter microflora of the gut. According to Dr. Dan Thomas, who co-authored a report on probiotics for the American Academy of Pediatrics, an "infant's early diet and intestinal microbes are likely to play a pivotal role in overall health." Studies in healthy infants and children have found probiotics to be both safe and well tolerated, although their overall efficacy has yet to be established.

MilkWorks carries several high quality probiotics:  Ther-Biotic for infants (powder form), BioGaia probiotic drops for infants, Pro-Biotic Complex for adults and Ther-Biotic Women's Formula (capsules).

babyworks is an on-going fundraiser for MilkWorks. It supports our educational and clinical services, and allows us to be a community breastfeeding center. Thank you for buying gifts and baby supplies. Your purchases support MilkWorks and breastfeeding.

"When we needed you most ..."

Suzy Meyers is one of the lactation consultants at MilkWorks.  From the wonderful letters we receive, it is clear that she is so much more.  This month we take a moment to say thank you to Suzy for all she does to make a difference for moms in our community!

Dear Suzy,

Thank you so much for all of your help and support with breastfeeding.   Alaura and I are so incredibly grateful. When we needed you most, you were there!  I feel you go above and beyond with your care and we appreciated it so much. With your help and encouragement I am loving breastfeeding and obviously Alaura is benefiting so much, too!  I will continue to come visit! thank you note Thanks again!
