Seventeen years too late, but I am still happy ...

By Ann Seacrest, RN, IBCLC, Executive Director, MilkWorks

The Supreme Court ruling this week on the Affordable Health Care Act is monumental for breastfeeding mothers. Not only does "Obamacare" amend the Fair Labor Standards Act and require that employers provide reasonable breaks and private space for mothers to pump, but as of August 1, 2012, health plans must  begin phasing in  100% coverage of certain proven preventive health services, including breast pumps and lactation support.

 Milk & Cookies & Friends

table at Milk & Cookies party

It was a hot Nebraska evening, perfect for friends to gather and enjoy delectable desserts and good music. MilkWorks 2nd annual Milk & Cookies fundraiser, hosted by Ed and Coty Ring at their lovely home, was a smashing success thanks to a group of volunteers led by Clover Frederick and Liz Ring Carlson. Local chefs donated incredible food, The Usual Suspects performed under the stars, and our friends raised over $13,000 to assure that all families have access to breastfeeding help. Thank you!

Understanding Our Mission

Mr. Richard Agee
MilkWorks lost one of its best friends
recently with the passing of Mr. Richard Agee, President of the Rogers Foundation. Over the past ten years, the Rogers Foundation has provided yearly support to MilkWorks and has been our largest financial donor.  Mr. Agee explained that he and his wife, Eloise, spent many years living in California and were involved in the preservation of Bighorn Sheep.  They learned that when bighorn lambs were separated from their mothers or weaned too early, they did not survive. As a result, he understood the importance of feeding human babies human milk.

Our condolences to Mrs. Agee and the Agee family. We appreciate the support of the Rogers Foundation as they help us create a healthier community by helping mothers breastfeed their babies.
Double the Joy

Ever wonder why women have two breasts?  As more mothers are giving birth to twins, two breasts definitely  come in handy.  While it
New group at MilkWorks - Twin Talk, for moms of multiples!
is double the work to breastfeed twins, it is also double the joy.  Twin babies have a tendency to come early, which means they often need a bit more help learning to breastfeed. Extra support and help in the early days is vital so a mom can develop a good milk supply and make sure babies get fed well.

Twin Talk is a new moms' group at MilkWorks designed just for moms of multiples. It is a perfect time and place to share ideas and learn from other moms. The next meetings are Thursday, July 5 and July 19 at 10:30 am. Siblings are welcome!
