Breastfeeding 59 years ago ...

By Ann Seacrest, Executive Director, MilkWorks

Ann Raschke Seacrest
ca. 1953
The year is 1963. I remember being 10 years old, snooping through my mother's closet and finding a pale pink baby book with my birth certificate tucked inside. As I opened the book, a small card fell out. My mother told me it was my "crib card." It read "Baby Girl Raschke, born March 11 at 11:53 pm, weight 7 lbs. 8 ounces." In the corner of the card was the word "Breast." My mother explained that she breastfed me. Thinking that all babies were fed from a bottle, I asked her why. She responded that our family could not afford to buy formula.

That discussion was my first experience with breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Educator .... IBCLC ... what's the difference?

What's a Breastfeeding Educator (or BE)?

BEs attend a breastfeeding workshop and work in positions where they provide basic breastfeeding information to mothers.  All of our front desk staff are Breastfeeding Educators.  If a mother is having difficulties, a BE will refer a mom to a board certified lactation consultant.

IBCLC stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, or what many people know as LCs.

The LC profession is an outgrowth of La Leche League, who found that peer support helped many mothers to breastfeed, but some mothers and babies needed more help.

IBCLC's are required to have a more extensive educational background and many hours of actual one-on-one clinical experience before qualifying to sit for a day long international exam. They must recertify every 5 years.  This gives them the skills and knowledge needed to help a mother and baby who are having problems breastfeeding. An initial appointment with an LC usually lasts 90 minutes. At MilkWorks, our follow up appointments are scheduled for 60 minutes. This allows enough time for a thorough assessment and feeding at each appointment.

Unfortunately,  LC's are rarely eligible for insurance reimbursement unless they are also licensed in another provider role such as an MD. This may change due to the Affordable Health Care Act, which will require insurance coverage for breastfeeding help later this year.

We keep learning more ...

Breastfeeding tied to stronger lungs, less asthma

Moms with asthma may be told that they can cause their baby to have asthma if they breastfeed. Two new studies, one form Great Britain and babyone from New Zealand, both present evidence that breastfeeding is beneficial to babies even if their moms have asthma.

The British study showed that breastfeeding increases lung function in babies, which helps to prevent asthma. According to the research out of New Zealand, each month that a mother exclusive breastfeeds, her baby benefits from a 9% decreased risk of developing asthma.

Neither study proves that mothers with asthma will not pass asthma to their babies. But researchers agree that this new information means that mothers with asthma should not be discouraged from breastfeeding.

A look back on a MilkWorks baby model

Over the past ten years, MilkWorks has had a very photogenic relationship with Erica Thompson, owner of Images for a
Sophia as our sling baby!
Lifetime. Erica took photos at our first birthday party and soon launched her career as a photographer of babies and families. Her photos are well known throughout Lincoln. Our web site is full of Erica photos...and some of her MilkWorks babies are icons.

Sophia, our famous sling baby, now lives in Bend, Oregon, with her mom and dad and little sister. Sophia's mom, Laura recently wrote:

"I couldn't have survived the first

year of motherhood without the support of MilkWorks. Not only was the staff knowledgeable and supportive, but the community of mamas that MilkWorks brings together was a lifeline for me."

Thanks, Laura and Sophia, for sharing your story and your photo!
