 Instruction manual, please?

By Ann Seacrest, Executive Director, MilkWorks

Breastfeeding is a simple biological process. A mother gives birth. This change in her hormones causes her breasts to make milk. Her baby shows feeding cues and latches to her breast, suckles vigorously and removes milk. More milk is made each time her baby wakes and feeds.

Ah, if it were only so simple! Ask many mothers and they will tell you a different story. The reality is that breastfeeding is a natural process, but it presents uniquely for each mother and baby. No instruction manual can do it justice.

Mothers used to learn how to breastfeed from their mothers, grandmothers, sisters and friends. In the year 2012, we now have nurses, doctors, midwives, breastfeeding educators and lactation consultants to round out the support team and make sure mothers get accurate information and guidance.

To Swaddle or Not To Swaddle
swaddled baby
Confused about recent reports that swaddling is not safe for your baby?

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that "Swaddling, when done correctly, can be an effective technique to help calm infants and promote sleep. Studies have shown that swaddling, in general, decreases startling, increases sleep duration and decreases spontaneous awakenings". Read more.

What do we know about correct swaddling?
  • Swaddling is best practiced on  very young babies who are not mobile (rolling over to their stomach). Babies should not be placed face down when swaddled.
  • It is important that a baby be able to move their legs while swaddled. The following link explains why tight swaddling of the hips is not recommended and includes a video demonstration of swaddling: http://www.hipdysplasia.org/Developmental-Dysplasia-Of-The-Hip/Hip-Healthy-Swaddling/Default.aspx
  • While swaddling may help a young baby to sleep on their back, so they do not startle and wake as often, it is not necessary to swaddle a baby all the time. Nor do all babies need swaddling.
  • Avoid thick swaddle blankets. Use a lightweight blanket so baby does not overheat.
  • Frequent holding, skin to skin comfort, wearing your baby safely in a sling, and giving your baby "tummy time" are all great ways for your baby to pass their early days and months.

The new federal Affordable Care Act amended the Fair Labor Act to make breastfeeding a bit easier for mothers who are returning to work outside the home. Employers must now provide necessary break times and a private space in order for mothers to pump while in the workplace.

Saturday, January 28th, MilkWorks will host its twice a year Return to Work and Breastfeed Your Baby event from 9:30 am to noon. A panel of experienced mothers and a lactation consultant will provide helpful hints and answer questions. Breakfast will be provided and there will be door prizes, including a Medela Pump In Style.

Breastfeeding and Flu Season
momsnugglingbaby

It's that time of the year! Flu season is in full swing.

Can you breastfeed if you get the flu? Absolutely. You will help pass antibodies to your baby that will protect your baby. Drink plenty of fluids and get rest while you are recovering from the flu. You can also protect your baby by washing your hands frequently during flu season.

Is it okay for your baby to breastfeed if your baby is sick? Absolutely. Breast milk is the perfect nutrition and hydration for your baby. Plus, many babies are comforted by breastfeeding - which is especially helpful when they are not feeling well.

Is it okay to obtain a flu vaccination while breastfeeding? Yes. You may receive the nasal spray flu vaccine or the flu shot.

Can your baby have a flu vaccine? Not if your baby is younger than 6 months of age. However, breastfeeding will help your baby's developing immune system fight off infections. Breastfed babies are less likely to get the flu and less likely to experience severe flu symptoms.

Breastfeeding Research

The Human Lactation Research group, under the direction of Professor Peter Hartmann at the University of Western Australia, will pr
esent breastfeeding momexciting new findings at Medela's 7th International Breastfeeding and Lactation Symposium to be held in Vienna, Austria, in April 2012. Their research on the ability to harvest stem cells from breastmilk may be the answer to ethically obtaining stem cells in a non-invasive manner. Stem cells have the potential to act as a type of "internal repair system" and have incredible potential for treatment of serious illnesses.

Medela, the makers of the Symphony and Pump In Style breast pumps, was founded in 1961 by Olle Larson in Zug, Switzerland. The company has been supporting medical research for the past 15 years with a goal of providing research based products for breastfeeding mothers around the world.
