When breastfeeding is second nature . . .

By Ann Seacrest, Executive Director, MilkWorks

Everything about breastfeeding seems pretty second nature to me. I breastfed my four children and have been helping mothers breastfeed for over twenty years. I can speak comfortably about breastfeeding to politicians and high school students, in front of television cameras and to people I meet in elevators and at parties. So when the Fusion Project asked me to teach a breastfeeding class to a group of eight moms, I did not even think twice. Until I showed up and learned my lesson.

Some of the moms and babies at
the Fusion Project.

The Fusion Project is housed in the Asian Center at 27th and O Street. Its goal is to help refugees become self-sufficient. The eight mothers I met with have been in Lincoln less than three years. Their families originated in Burma but were forced to flee to Thailand because of war. The women all grew up in a refugee camp. They are now raising their families in Lincoln, trying to learn our language and navigate our ways.

What lesson did I learn from them? That I had absolutely nothing to teach them about breastfeeding. They are all pros. Their mothers taught them to keep their babies close, be gentle and breastfeed. And they have followed their mothers' advice.

When I asked the mothers what they appreciate about life in Lincoln, they all said, "Freedom."  This made me think about American women who have many freedoms, including the freedom to choose to breastfeed. At the same time, American mothers often lack a support system that makes breastfeeding work for them.

The women from Thailand know breastfeeding intimately because there is no choice - it is how the women in their culture feed their babies. America is a free country and while our choices are not always easy, we wouldn't want it any other way.

I want to welcome the new Americans, the mothers in the Fusion Project, who will now have more choices available to them. Hopefully they will continue to breastfeed their babies because it is second nature to them.  Maybe we can learn from them and realize that when we have a culture that truly provides the support that mothers need to make breastfeeding work, the choice to breastfeed will be much easier!

We have a great selection of swaddle blankets, sleep bags, Woombies, Snuggle Nests, Arm's Reach Co-Sleepers, David Fussenegger blankets, Putumayo music and Twilight Turtles.

Sleep? What's that?

If we could only give new parents a gift certificate for sleep!

Ask any grandparent what they miss about being a new parent and theirsleeping baby eyes will glaze over with fond memories. Until it comes to sleep. It is the one thing that no one seems to get enough of as a new parent.

Most people assume that breastfeeding means less sleep. After all, don't babies feed more often because human milk digests so easily? Mother nature comes to the rescue! Breastfeeding provides a dose of calming hormones to help mothers and babies sleep well, even when baby has a nighttime feed.

When you need a bit of extra help, turn to some of the sleep products that we carry.

  • Sleep bags keep babies warm without loose blankets.
  • Swaddle blankets (and Woombies) help prevent young babies from startling and waking more frequently.
  • Gentle night lights assure toddlers.
  • Elizabeth Pantley's books help parents establish bed time routines.

Community Resources

Moms learn about breastfeeding best from other moms. Family

Sarah and her son

Service WIC (a food supplement program for moms and babies who meet ncome guidelines) makes that happen with their peer counselor program.

Sarah (pictured here with her son Marcus) says that when she had problems breastfeeding, her peer counselor encouraged her to go to MilkWorks for help, "which made all the difference." Now, Sarah is "paying forward" by being a peer counselor herself.
