With a little help from our friends ...
By Ann Seacrest, Executive Director, MilkWorks
As a community breastfeeding center, MilkWorks depends upon grants, donations and fundraisers. This income allows us to provide free moms' groups and drop in weight checks, answer breastfeeding questions 7 days a week and offer reduced consultation fees for low income moms.
Recently one of our funders complimented MilkWorks. She said "You know what you want (to help moms breastfeed), you are very tenacious and you know how to ask for help." Help is exactly what we got when a group of incredible volunteers, led by Sarah McCurley, planned our July 16th Family Festival to celebrate ten years of MilkWorks. It was fantastic!
Breastfeeding moms are a lot like MilkWorks. They know what they want (to feed their babies well), they need to be tenacious (it is not always easy to get babies to breastfeed well), and they need to be willing to ask for help.
 | | Senator Annette Dubas, right, at MilkWorks with daughter, Deanna, and grandbabies Franny and Rose. |
Moms got some extra special help this year in the form of Nebraska State Senator Annette Dubas, who also happens to be Grandmother Dubas. Senator Dubas sponsored and prioritized LB 197, which quite simply states that a Nebraska mother may breastfeed her baby anywhere she has a legal right to be.
Thank you, Senator Dubas!

| What is World Breastfeeding Week?
Here at MilkWorks, we think about breastfeeding every day of the year! World Breastfeeding Week is being celebrated around the world from August 1 - 7. It is a time for EVERYONE to think about breastfeeding one week of the year.
The 2011 focus aims to engage young people and encourages families to talk about breastfeeding. Children are surrounded by images of dolls with bottles. Breasts are too often portrayed only as sexual objects. Talk to your children about how you fed them. The more that breastfeeding is seen as the normal thing to do, the more likely it will become the norm!

Fun, Fun, Fun!!! |

Our Family Festival was so much fun! It was a hot and sweaty July morning in Nebraska - but Prairie Hill Learning Center allowed everyone to stretch out and play, eat ice cream and listen to great music! Sarah McCurley and a great team of volunteers, musicians and local businesses made sure that our tenth birthday was a memorable one.

Signing in September
| Marcia Murray, a Baby Sign Language Specialist, will be back at MilkWorks in September and October with her Kindersigns class for parents, babies and toddlers.

Signing is a perfect way to communicate with your 6 to 18 month old. It helps pre-verbal children express their wants and needs - and reduces frustration for both kids and parents. Both parents and grandparents are welcome to attend. Class meets once a week for 4 weeks. Fee is $20 for a 4 week session. |
