Greetings!
Home Away From Home . . .
Women often give birth and breastfeed their babies without family members living close by. There is a saying that "mothers were not meant to do this alone" and another saying that "it takes a village to raise a child." MilkWorks takes both of these concepts very seriously.
In many cultures,
 | Hana, Marie and Ann
| grandparents and other family members play a dominant role when a new baby is born. They help with household chores, make meals and model parenting behavior: soothing a crying baby or rocking a baby to sleep. It's all so basic and seems so simple. Unless you are a new parent doing it for the first time in a sleep deprived state of mind.
MilkWorks has the pleasure of working with many mothers who are new to Lincoln and away from their families. We get to play a special role in their lives because they don't have family support. Luckily, we are very accessible. No appointment is needed to walk in our front door, sit down on our sofa and feel at home.
I recently worked with a family from the Czech Republic who were here for a year at UNL. It was a joy to be part of their lives. Hana and Stepan and baby Marie have now returned to their families across the ocean. Thanks to technology, Hana can wake up today, sit down at her computer, re-live a bit of her daughter's early days by reading this newsletter, and share MilkWorks with her family and friends at home. That's a pretty big village, but one that we are very proud of.

What's Walkable at babyworks?
| |
Healthy feet from the start!
Feet come in all sizes and shapes. When a baby is learning to walk, it is important to protect those feet, but also let them do their job! Stiff, boring white baby shoes are a thing of the past. Today's shoes are fun and cute - yet it is also important that they be healthy.
Before a baby walks, soft sole shoes (like a moccasin) protect little feet from being cold (and they look cute). Once a baby is starting to walk, it is still important that the shoe be soft, so a baby can grip with his or her toes. This is how a baby learns to balance.
According to Dr. Torrey Rassfeld, a Lincoln podiatrist, when you are ready for a sturdier shoe, the sole should be flexible, the heel should have sturdy support and the shoe should be wide enough for comfort. There should only be about a half thumb width at the toes. Otherwise an early walking baby may trip. This means that a shoe may only fit for a couple of months when a baby is learning to walk. A shoe should be wide enough to fit the width/thickness of a baby's foot. If it gaps on the sides, it is too wide.

Celebrating 30 Years of Protection
| |
On May 21, 1981, the World Health Assembly adopted the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes, a unique and indispensable tool to protect and promote breastfeeding.
To this day, the Code seeks ethical marketing of breastmilk substitutes in order to protect healthy practices in infant feeding, especially in developing countries. It recognizes the basic premise that the biologic norm of breastfeeding provides health protections to mothers and children throughout their lives. Two hundred countries have adopted the Code since it as introduced thirty years ago.
