Time to celebrate!
Last week Nebraska joined the rest of the country when Governor Heineman signed the new breastfeeding bill into law! Nebraska mothers may now nurse their babies in any location they have a legal right to be.
Having just returned from a service trip to Honduras in Central America, I am very aware of the drastically different living conditions in our two countries, as well as a drastically different attitude towards mothers feeding their babies.

Many of the products at babyworks are earth-friendly, too!
We look for "green" products and companies that are dedicated to improving our planet. Check out their websites to see just how important being earth-friendly is to them!

Green Toys are made in the USA from recycled milk jugs. We carry toy trucks (including a recycling truck), stacking toys, blocks, toy kitchen accessories and more!
Reusable lunch and snack bags from Planet Wise and LunchSkins help reduce landfill waste by providing an alternative to plastic baggies.
Livie and Luca shoes are made from the remains of high quality leather that would
otherwise be thrown away.
Natural skin care products from Little Twig, California Baby and Weleda are good for the earth and your skin.
And there are many more "green" products, including: cloth diapers and wipes, eco-friendly laundry detergents, organic clothing and swaddle blankets, feeding accessories and storage, wet bags and washable breast pads.

Meet a MilkWoman!

Meet Paula Velander, our Mom Talk Leader!
Paula, a breastfeeding educator at MilkWorks, is the host of our mom's group. She is the mother of four children and originally hails from the mountains of Virginia. The Velander family moved to Lincoln 7 years ago.
Since MilkWorks opened our doors in 2001, one of our main services has been a weekly mom's group: a place for moms and their babies to come and gather informally, to talk about breastfeeding and other issues related to being a new mother.
Each Wednesday morning, Paula gathers chairs around in a circle, puts some quiet music on, and greets mothers as they "drop in". Discussion topics range from breastfeeding, to a great recipe for babies starting solids, to sleep patterns, to daily life.
"It's a great, great resource," Paula says. "Friendships are made that continue outside MilkWorks. It's a community for new mothers. One of the nicest things in the world to a new mom is to be understood."

Paula says she is honored to watch the babies that started the group as newborns take their first steps, and to watch the moms grow in confidence and develop friendships.
Mom's group has an open door policy and Paula encourages moms who plan to return to work to attend: "Come when you can!" she says.

Walk for the March of Dimes
|
MilkWorks has been the recipient of two grants from the Nebraska March of Dimes. Originally focused on curing polio, in more recent years the March of Dimes is committed to "research and programs that help babies begin healthy lives." They have been working hard to reduce the rate of premature births. The March of Dimes is holding their annual walk for stronger, healthier babies on April 30th at Holmes Lake Park. Premature babies (even those born slightly early) and their mothers often require more support when breastfeeding. One of the reasons MilkWorks developed our Lactation Care Package is so that moms with premature babies get all the help that they need. With patience and guidance, most babies learn to breastfeed beautifully.
