It's All About Community!

Ann Seacrest

Executive Director

We recently received a thank you note and donation from a Lincoln day care provider who relies upon us to answer questions she has when taking care of babies who are breastfeeding. This is exactly what US Surgeon General Regina M. Benjamin meant by community support when she issued the recent Call to Action for Breastfeeding.

Everyone in our community, from a breastfeeding mother, to her partner, to her mother-in-law, to her health care provider, to her employer, to her day care provider, needs to know where they can get accurate, consistent information and support.

Not just when a mom has a baby who won't latch or isn't gaining weight, but for all those other small reasons we don't think about. The support needs to be easy to access and it needs to be available 7 days a week (and preferably 24 hours a day!).

MilkWorks doesn't quite fit the bill of 24/7. But 7 days a week we provide a full range of services and many ways to access support:  online, by phone and in person. Need to chat with other moms?  Come to Mom Talk. Want to weigh your baby? Drop in for a free weight check. Need expert medical advice for a breastfeeding baby with health problems? Make an appointment with Dr. Leeper. Need  a speaker for your high school students? That's us. We serve the whole community.

Breastfeeding support will not change overnight. Lincoln has made progress in the past 10 years, and LB 197, which protects a woman's right to breastfeed in public, will mean we have made more progress. But there are many more pieces of the breastfeeding pie. Moms need consistent information from all their health care providers. They need support in the workforce. Moms also need to know this is not about perfection. It is about getting the support that they need.

In the end our community will win. Moms will feel supported, health care costs will decrease and the health and well-being of our community will improve. Breastfeeding  support will then translate to a healthier community for all of us!

Thank you for letting us be your community breastfeeding center!

MilkWorks is all about infant nutrition. Not just breastfeeding, but also the next step:  solid food. Pediatric specialists recommend that babies start solids when they are developmentally ready. What does this mean? Around the same time that your baby can start to sit up, he or she will likely show an interest in the food you eat. Your baby will also begin to pick up small items and, when you put something on the tip of your baby's tongue, instead of spitting it out, your baby will be more apt to swallow it. At the same time, a baby's digestive tract is ready to handle what we call "foreign proteins" - foods other than human milk.

Lisa Kopecky, a breastfeeding educator and registered dietician, helps parents navigate this territory of solid food by sharing readiness signs and safety awareness in her Introducing Solids class. Breastfeeding is the first step in preventing obesity (which is epidemic in Nebraska).  Starting solids at an appropriate time and continuing to feed your baby healthy foods is the next crucial step.

First Lady Michelle Obama recently released the second stage of her "Let's Move" obesity prevention campaign. The primary message is:  more support for breastfeeding moms and healthy snacks for toddlers!

Visit our Parent Information Center for more information about introducing solids - and check out all of our fun and healthy feeding tools when your baby is ready to tackle the solids!

babyworks is an on-going fundraiser for MilkWorks. It supports our educational and clinical services, and allows us to be a community breastfeeding center. Thank you for buying gifts and baby supplies. Your purchases support MilkWorks and breastfeeding.
Just In from the IRS!

A tax ruling by the IRS last year disallowed breast pumps and other breastfeeding supplies as medical deductions, thus excluding them as permissible expenses under flexible health spending accounts. Momsrising.org, a group of activist moms, as well as other breastfeeding advocates, lobbied hard to get this changed. It's happened!

Please help us welcome Tammy Ingwerson

Tammy Ingwerson

Tammy

Tammy is our new pump rental assistant and she comes well prepared for the job! Both of Tammy's kids were born early and had problems latching well. Determined to give them the best food, Tammy pumped for nearly a year with each of them. She could not be better suited for helping to manage all of our pump rentals. We are pleased to have her on board!

What's the difference between a rental pump and a purchase pump?

Rental pumps (often called hospital grade pumps)  are the cream of the crop - usually the most comfortable, efficient and effective pumps. They are a closed system, which means that with a new individual kit, they may be used by more than one mom. Hospital grade pumps are much more costly than a single user pump, which is also why they are rental pumps, rather than purchase pumps. They are especially helpful for premature babies, babies who do not latch or remove milk well, or any time a mother would rather rent a pump than purchase a pump. We carry the Medela Symphony, which is the same pump that both Lincoln hospitals have available for use when moms are in the hospital.

Purchase pumps are designed to be used when breastfeeding is going well and a mom needs to pump for work or travel or for convenience.  They are usually under warranty for a single user only. We carry the Medela Freestyle, Pump In Style, Swing and Harmony. Our staff will help you decide which pump will meet your needs and will teach you how to use your new pump. Remember, our pump prices are the best in town!
